The Knowledge about Allah (Subhanaahu wa Ta’ala) is considered the greatest and most noble knowledge in the religion of Islam. It is ‘Al-Fiqh-ul-Akbar’ (Greatest Jurisprudence).
The Prophet (Salla-Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:
” If Allah wants to do good to a person, He makes Him comprehend the religion [ the understanding of the Qur’an and Sunnah of the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam)].” [Al-Bukhari]
1-The first step in comprehending the religion is to learn about Allah (Subhanaahu wa Ta’ala), His Names and Attributes.
This is the way of the Messengers:
When the Messengers were conveying the message of Allah to the people:
- They taught them about Allah, His Names and Attributes.
- Then They showed them the way of attaining Allah’s Love, and the way that one approaches Allah and what is the way that keeps one away from Allah
- Then They mentioned the recompense that consequent on that.
Ibn al-Qayyim (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu) said: “Every construction has a foundation. And the foundation of this religion is the belief in Allah, His Names and Attributes. As long as the foundation is firm and strong as the construction will be firm, strong and safe from collapse.
2- The Knowledgeable person’s concern is to correct and perfect this foundation; while the ignorant builds a high construction without foundation, soon it will collapse.
Allah says in Surat at-Tawbah (9:109) :
Is the one who laid the foundation of his building on Taqwa (righteousness with fear) from Allah and (seeking) approval better or the one who laid the foundation of his building on the edge of a bank about to collapse, so it collapsed with him into fire of Hell?.
This foundation comprises of two matters:
- Correct knowledge about Allah, His Commands, His Names and his Attributes.
- Pure Obedience to Him and His Messenger and to none else.
“This is the Strongest foundation that a slave should build his construction on and accordingly, he can elevate in his building as he wills.” – [Al Fawa’id]
Why do many people relapse in their faith? This is because their foundation is not Perfect.
When you guide people, don’t talk to them about night prayers, voluntary fasts, etc. Talk about Allah! First, teach them who is their Lord.
What is the importance of learning about Allah’s Names and Attributes?
It is the foundation of the religion.
The knowledgeable person directs his concern to reinforce this foundation by learning more about Allah (Subhanaahu wa Ta’ala) and His Names while the ignorant neglects the foundation and builds high construction on weak foundation, which will soon collapse with him into Hellfire.
This explains the Hadeeth of the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam):
A man may do what may seem to the people the deeds of dwellers of Paradise, but he is of the dwellers of Hell-Fire and a man may do what may seem to the people as the deeds of dwellers of the Hell-fire, but he is from the dwellers of Paradise.
-[Reported by Al-Bukhari]
The reason is one building on a strong foundation and one building without a foundation or on a weak foundation.
