Virtues of Having Intention (Part 2)
The Salaaf used to perform good deeds secretly. They hid their good deed to the extent that even their own families didn’t know.
The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said that the first three people to be thrown into the hellfire will be; the scholar (who taught for fame), the martyr (who fought for fame), and the person who gave his money in charity (so people would say he is generous). All three of these people desired the pleasure of the people over the pleasure of Allah.
Jabir (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu) mentioned that every slave on the Day of Judgment will be resurrected according to what he died upon, if he died upon a good intention he will be resurrected upon that. And if he died upon a bad intention, he will be resurrected upon that.
Narrated Ayesha (Radia Allaahu ‘anha) that the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said : “The people will be judged on the day of Judgment depending on their intention.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
Evidence of this is in Surah at- Tariq, verse 86
إِنَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَجۡعِهِۦ لَقَادِرٌ۬ يَوۡمَ تُبۡلَى ٱلسَّرَآٮِٕرُ
Verily, (Allâh) is Able to bring him back (to life) The Day when all the secrets (deeds, prayers, fasting, etc.) will be examined (as to their truth)
and in Surat al-Aadiyat Verse: 10
أَفَلَا يَعۡلَمُ إِذَا بُعۡثِرَ مَا فِى ٱلۡقُبُورِ وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِى ٱلصُّدُورِ
Knows He not that when the contents of the graves are poured forth (all mankind is resurrected) And that which is in the breasts (of men) is made known?
The second virtue of having a good intention is that if the person’s concern is the Day of Judgement, Allah will enrich his heart and gather for him all his affairs of the Dunya even if he doesn’t like something of the Dunya.
The prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said “Whoever makes the Aakhirah his concern, Allah will gather together his affairs, place contentment in his heart and the world will come to him despite his reluctance. And whoever makes the Dunya his concern, Allah will scatter his affairs, put poverty before him and nothing of the world will come to him except what Allah has written for him.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhee and authenticated by Al-Albani]
In addition, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him, has said in the Hadith: “Whoever makes all concerns as only one; which is the concern of the Hereafter, Allah will suffice him from all other concerns; and this whose concerns of the conditions of the worldly life are ramified, Allah will not care in which valley he perishes“ [Declared good by Al-Albani].
Let your intention be only for Allah and no one else. Allah is watching our hearts and he knows exactly what is in your heart.
Another virtue of having good intention is that:
Eternal living in paradise depends on the intention and Eternal living in the hereafter depends on the intention.
One may ask how come a disbeliever who died upon disbelief is kept eternally in hellfire while a believer who died upon belief is kept eternally in the paradise.
This is because the disbeliever’s intention when he was alive was to continue disbelieving in Allah forever and the believer’s intention when he was alive was to continue believing in Allah forever.
The evidence of this is in the Qur’an, Surat al-An’am (Chap 6, Verse 28)
فَقَالُواْ يَا لَيْتَنَا نُرَدُّ وَلاَ نُكَذِّبَ بِآيَاتِ رَبِّنَا وَنَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
“If you could but see when they are made to stand before the Fire and will say, “Oh, would that we could be returned [to life on earth] and not deny the signs of our Lord and be among the believers.”
On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers are shown the hell fire, they will ask Allah to return them back and that they would follow what the Messenger has sent.
Allah replies to them in Verse 28,
“But what they concealed before has [now] appeared to them. And even if they were returned, they would return to that which they were forbidden; and indeed, they are liars.”
He knows what their intention was and what was established in their heart.
Another virtue of good intention is that Allah’s help and protection will come to you according to your intention
Saalim wrote to Ibn Aziz to bear in mind that Allah’s help for His slave is according to his Niyyah. If his Niyyah is perfect Allah’s help will be perfect if his Niyyah is diminished then Allah’s help will be also diminished.
How much care you give to your intention, accordingly Allah will protect you in your affairs.
Keep in mind before you do any good deed to pause for a moment. Ask yourself these questions:
1) What do you hope for by doing this particular deed?
2) Why are you doing it in the first place?
It is important for us to train ourselves before doing any good deed so as to get the reward accordingly.
