Posted by Enlightenment into Islam Center
Last week, we learnt the meaning of deifying Allah. Today, we will learn the meaning of the Name ‘Allah’ (Azza wa Jal) and it’s characteristics.
Group of Ahl-‘Ilm (Scholars) said that this is the greatest Name of Allah, which if one asked Allah with, Allah will grant him his request.
The Characteristics of the Name – Allah.
1- This Name is the basis for all the beautiful Names of Allah and all the Names are added to it such as Surat Ta-ha, Verse 8:
اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ لَهُ الْأَسْمَاء الْحُسْنَى
“Allah – there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names.“
And Surat al-Hashr, Verse 22:
هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ هُوَ الرَّحْمَنُ الرَّحِيمُ
“He is Allah , other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.“
It is said that Al-Khaaliq (The Creator), Ar-Razzaq (The Provider), Al-Hakeem (All-Wise) are all Names of Allah. It is not said that Allah is one of the Names of Ar-Rahmaan (The Most Merciful) or Al-Aziz (All-Mighty).
2-The Name- Allah, implies the meaning of all the Names, generally. The Name Allah is reference of all the other Names.
3-When the word يا (Yaa) precedes it, the Alif ( أ ) and Laa (ل ) are not cancelled, you say:
While for the rest of the beautiful Names, when Yaa precedes, Alif and Laa get cancelled.
eg: Ar-Rahman —> You say: يا رحمن
You do not say : يا الرحمن
4- This Name is included in all the remembrances like Tahleel, Tahmeed, Takbeer, Tasbeeh, Hawqalah, Hasbalah, Basmalah, etc
5-It is the most mentioned Name in the Qur’an. It has been mentioned 2,200 times more than any other Name of Allah.
Ibn ul Qayyim (Rahimahullaah) said: This Name implies every perfection, every praise, every honor and every might. It implies every generosity and Majesty. If this Name is mentioned in something little, it will increase it nor it is mentioned at the time of fear, but it removes it. Nor it is mentioned at the time of distress but it relieves it. Nor it is mentioned at the time of constriction and it broadens it.
The Meaning of the Name – Allah
The origin of the Name is (Ilaah) ﺇاله , which means ‘The worshipped One’.
As Ibn ‘Abbas (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu) said: ” He is the Owner of all the divine Attributes which are all the Perfect Attributes of Majesty, Greatness, Beauty and the Attributes of Mercy, Generosity and Benevolence. He is the Only One Who deserves to be worshipped and no one else.”
These Attributes make Him to deserve all the Love and all the Magnification. He Whom the people of the Heavens and earth deify willingly and unwillingly. All submitted to His Grandeur, Subdued to His Will.
These meanings of the Name are joined in many verses in the Qur’an. Such as Surat Ta-Ha, Verse 14:
إِنَّنِي أَنَا اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاعْبُدْنِي وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِذِكْرِي
“Indeed, I am Allah . There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.”
In Surat Al-Anbiya’, Verse 25:
وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا نُوحِي إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاعْبُدُونِ
“And We sent not before you any messenger except that We revealed to him that, “There is no deity except Me, so worship Me.”
The meaning of the Name – Allah will make you to put a decisive line ( a barrier) between Imaan (faith) and Hypocrisy. i.e. Your Heart should be attached most to Allah because He is Perfect in His Attributes. If your Heart is filled with Allah’s love and Magnification to Him then you have fulfilled the Uloohiyyaah.
To fulfill your Uboodiyah, the servitude as an attribute for that slave who is standing before his Lord in Humility and Submission. You should fulfill that He is Your Ilaah whom you love the Most and Magnify/Honor Mostly, then fulfill that you show humility to Him by your heart.
The Knowledge about Allah is the remedy for all the problems and attachments to other than Allah.
As your Knowledge about Allah increases, accordingly your love for Allah will increase. To Allah belongs all the Highest Attributes. Take Him as your Wakeel (Surety). Due to modern civilization which is not based on the religion, many Psychological problem arise such as fear from criticism, fear about future, fear of death etc.
Why do we Fear death? Although it is a fact which all of us will face one day [the Believer and the Disbeliever, the young and the old], no one is exempted.
The Belief in this fact should make us to work hard for that day or moment, to plan for our life in the grave. Because at the time of death, either one dies with a good end or bad end. Either the angels of mercy will take his soul or either the angels of torment will take his soul. This knowledge should not depart from our mind, we should pray to Allah to grant us the good end and to guide us to perform good deeds by which will attain us the good end.
As your Knowledge about Allah increases, accordingly your love for Allah should increase. Bear in mind that Ar-Raqeeb (The All- Watcher), Allah deals with you according to what is established in your heart. He watches your heart, either He finds ‘La ilaha illa Allah’ weak in your heart or He finds it strong in your heart.
Knowledge about Allah causes Humility to Allah and Submissiveness. When one knows Allah’s command is executive, He is All-Mighty, to Him belongs all the dominion, no one can resist Him. When we learn about Allah’s greatness, then we would know our reality (that we were nothing and Allah created us, from despised water and semen of no value, a fluid of male and female discharge). He granted us sight, hearing and mind.
Also, when you know about Allah, This will make you stop at His Command , Worship Him with humility and act upon His Command without Objection. Our present situation is such that we give ourselves the right to reject the law of Allah/ to judge Allah.
Bear in mind that the time that you spend in knowing about Allah is the time which you will benefit in making your scale heavy on the Day of Resurrection.
Another benefit or importance of Knowing about Allah is that the believers are far from hypocrisy because they know who Allah is and accordingly they love Him and Magnify Him the Most. So Knowing Allah brings the person out of fold of hypocrisy and into the fold of faith.
Surat al-Baqarah, Verse 14 shows us the attitude of the hypocrites:
وَإِذَا لَقُواْ الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ قَالُواْ آمَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوْاْ إِلَى شَيَاطِينِهِمْ قَالُواْ إِنَّا مَعَكْمْ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِئُونَ
“And when they meet those who believe, they say, “We believe”; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, “Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers.”
Because the Name Ar-Raqeeb (The All Watchful) is weak in their Hearts, this is why they behaved in this way. The believers know Allah while the hypocrites do not know Allah.
