Virtues of Having Intention (Part 4) – 16th Oct. 2011

The matter of intention is business with Allah (Azza wa Jal). Your rewards for performing good deeds depends on the multiple intentions you have for a certain deed.

This week, we end our series – Virtues of Having Intentions by mentioning one last important virtue that most of us are unaware of , which is:

One may hope for many rewards when intending to do just one action

Abu Talib al-Makki says: “The slave may attain the reward for his deeds according to how much Allah grants him of Niyyahs (intentions). He (the slave) may hope for many rewards from performing one deed and that is according to the knowledge of the slave and how much Niyyahs (intentions) he remembers. The slave gets for every intention ten good deeds.”

This makes one to perform the deeds that especially includes transitive benefit (i.e. benefits others) and to have many  intentions.

e.g: The intentions once can have while making Wudu (Taharah):

FIRST: You hope to be one of the believer (to be attributed with Faith).

The Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

Wudu is half of the Faith.” [Muslim]

SECOND: The hope to be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection and your face, hands and feet is shining or white because of the habit of performing Wudu’. This means that the believers among the Muslims will be distinguished from other communities by virtue of performing wudu’.

The Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

“On the Day of Resurrection, my followers (or Ummah) will be called All Ghurr al-Muhajjalun from the traces of ablution.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

THIRD: The hope to be recognized by the Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) based on the previous Hadeeth. Hadeeth no 1029 [Riyad us Saliheen]

FOURTH: Hoping for the expiation of your sins. (Minor sins)

Allah’s Messenger (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

“If anyone of performs the ablution perfectly (i.e. according to the Sunnah), his sins will come out from his body even from under his nails.” [Muslim]

Uthman Bin ‘Affan said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) perform ablution the way i have just done it and said, ‘He who performs ablution properly in this manner and proceeds towards the mosque (to offer prayers), all his previous (minor) sins will be forgiven. His walking to the mosque and his Salat (prayer) will earn him extra merit.'” [Muslim]

FIFTH: The hope  to be elevated in ranks in Paradise.

Allah’s Messenger (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

Shall I not tell you something by which Allah blots out the sins and elevates ranks (in Paradise)?. The companions said: “Yes, O Allah’s Messenger” He (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Performing ablution thoroughly in spite of difficult circumstances, walking with more paces to the mosque and waiting for the next Salaat after observing the previous Salaat, and that is Ar-Ribaat, and that is Ar-Ribaat.” [Muslim]

SIXTH: The hope of having the gates of Paradise opened for you.

Allah’s Messenger (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

If anyone of you makes ablution carefully and then affirms:

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ   اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ

‘I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger. [Muslim]  O Allah, make me among those who turn to You in repentance, and make me among those who are purified.’ [Nasa‘i]

the eight gates of paradise are opened for him. He may enter by whichever of these gates he desires (to enter).” [Muslim]

What is the meaning of ‘ the eight gates of paradise are opened for him’ ?

It means (And Allah Knows best) that Allah will make it easy for the person to do all the deeds which will make him enter these eight gates. These eight gates include: The gate for Salaat, the gate for Siyam (fasting), the gate for charity, the gate for Jihad, etc. Accordingly Allah (Subhanaahu wa Ta’ala) will make it easy for this person who has perfected his Wudu by Tawheed (Which is the purification of the heart), the deeds which will make him enter from which ever gate he wills.

SEVENTH: The Hope of attaining Allah’s love.

Allah loves Al-Mutatahhireen and At-Tawabeen (those who purify themselves and those who repent). You also obtain Allah’s love by following the Sunnah of the Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam). Evidence: Surat al-Imran (3: 31) –

Say, [O Muhammad], “If you should love Allah , then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”

EIGHT: The hope to enter Paradise

NINTH: The hope that an Angel will pray for you as you retire (sleep)  in state of purity.

TEN: Whoever performs Wudu’ twice (washing his limbs) will get multiple reward from Allah and whoever performs wudu’ thrice (washing his limbs), then he has performed the Wudu’ of the Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) and the Prophets before him.

Anas Bin Maalik (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu) narrated that the Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) asked for water to perform Wudu’. He washed his face once, his hands once, his feet once, then he said: ‘This is the Wudu’ which Allah will accept no Salat without it.‘ Then he (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) asked for water to perform Wudu’, so he performed Wudu’ by washing twice twice, then he said: ‘This is the Wudu’ of whom Allah will give multiple reward.’ He (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) then asked for water to perform Wudu’ and he washed thrice (the limbs) saying: ‘This is the Wudu’ of your Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) and the Prophets before him.‘” [Al Silsilah as Saheeha #261]

One can also gather many Niyyahs (intentions) by  using (wearing) lawful perfumes:

Following the Sunnah of the Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) because the Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) used to love perfume and use perfume.

Putting perfume in women gatherings with the intention of not harming other with offensive smell. And Also to prevent Gheebah (backbiting) that could happened when they are offended from the bad smell. (Warding off the chances for people to sin)

Also, having the intention not to offend the Angels that are around you if you intend to read the Qur’an or perform an act of worship. This will  also show your veneration to the beloved creations of Allah. This honor and love for the Angels indicates your love for the sake of Allah.

Imam Shafi’ee (Rahimahullaah) said: “Whose smell is nice, his understanding (mind will increase).” i.e. The good smell opens the mind.

Gathering many intentions especially for the deeds in which one associates with people, requires knowledge and only the guided person is the one whom Allah guides.

Over the past weeks, we’ve been mentioning many virtues for the intention. Intention is required in everything. You cannot move without intention, but it is important to make your intention for Allah’s sake.

Athawri (Rahimahullaah) said to Ali bin al-Hassan: “work with Niyyah (Intention), eat with Niyyah and drink with Niyyah.”

Ibraheem at-Taimi was asked to give a speech (talk). He replied: “I cannot recall any intention.” i.e. he cannot speak unless it precedes it with a Niyyah (Intention).

This means everything you do, you should do it with an intention and it is required from you to check your intention.

Na’ieem bin Hammad used to say: “To be beaten with lashes is easier for us than bringing a good righteous Niyyah (Intention).”

This is to indicate the difficulty of remembering to have a good intention, but bear in mind that it is easy for whom Allah (Subhanaahu wa Ta’ala) has made  it easy for.

Now that you know the virtues of intentions, what should you do in order to gather your heart upon a good intention?

This question will be answered in our next series – How can one obtain SINCERITY?
