The Name of Allah Al Qaadir, Al Qadeer &Al Muqtadeer (Part 3) – Sunday 27th Nov 2011

After knowing the Meanings of the three Names and the difference between them. This week we continue to relate the Name ‘Al Qaadir’  to the context of the verses in the Noble Qur’an.


In Surat Al Isra, Verse 99:

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْاْ أَنَّ اللّهَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ قَادِرٌ عَلَى أَن يَخْلُقَ مِثْلَهُمْ وَجَعَلَ لَهُمْ أَجَلاً لاَّ رَيْبَ فِيهِ فَأَبَى الظَّالِمُونَ إَلاَّ كُفُوراً

“Do they not see that Allah , who created the heavens and earth, is [the one] Able to create the likes of them? And He has appointed for them a term, about which there is no doubt. But the wrongdoers refuse [anything] except disbelief.”

What does the Name Qaadir here mean and what is the context about?

In order to understand the context of the verse, you need to look at the previous verses. Here Allah is talking about those who disbelieved in the resurrection, they denied the Ability of Allah in resurrecting them and bringing them back to life after their death. In Surat al Isra, Verse 98, the disbelievers claim:

وَقَالُواْ أَئِذَا كُنَّا عِظَاماً وَرُفَاتاً أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ خَلْقاً جَدِيدا

“When we are bones and crumbled particles, will we [truly] be resurrected [in] a new creation?”

Allah (Subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) replied to them that He is Able to do that, for He created the heavens and the earth, so raising them up again is easier for Him, as He (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala) says in Surat Ghafir, Verse 57:

لَخَلْقُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ خَلْقِ النَّاسِ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

“The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.”

And Also He (Subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) says in Surat Ahqaf, Verse 33:

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّهَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَلَمْ يَعْيَ بِخَلْقِهِنَّ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَى أَنْ يُحْيِيَ الْمَوْتَى بَلَى إِنَّهُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِير

“Do they not see that Allah , who created the heavens and earth and did not fail in their creation, is able to give life to the dead? Yes. Indeed, He is over all things competent.”

In Surat Ya-sin, Verse 81-82:

أَوَلَيْسَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَى أَنْ يَخْلُقَ مِثْلَهُم بَلَى وَهُوَ الْخَلَّاقُ الْعَلِيمُ

ِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئاً أَنْ يَقُولَ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُ

“Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the likes of them? Yes, [it is so]; and He is the Knowing Creator.

“His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, “Be,” and it is.”

The meaning of the above verses is that on the  Day of Resurrection, Allah will recreate and restore their bodies, as He created them in the first place, and He has decreed for them an appointed time, whereof there is no doubt. But the wrong doers refuse after the proof has been established against them. They persist in their falsehood and misguidance.

In the previous lecture, we discussed few verses and related their meaning to the context of the verse. But what are the beliefs that should be established in our Hearts after knowing the meaning?

In surat al-An’am, Verse 37:  Allah is Able to do everything therefore, you should not ask except from Him

In Surat al-An’am, Verse 65: Allah is Able to send down a punishment, If He deals with you with forbearance and not hastening the punishment, do not be deceived.

Surat al Isra, Verse 99: Allah’s Ability to resurrect us and give life to the dead. Do not think that this matter is far and beyond Allah’s Ability. Even if the days and nights are prolonged, Allah has set a term (time) for everything to be re-created and brought forth from their graves.

The Name Al Qaadir is also mentioned in the following verses:

Surat Al Mu’minoon, Verse 18:

وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً بِقَدَرٍ فَأَسْكَنَّاهُ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَإِنَّا عَلَى ذَهَابٍ بِهِ لَقَادِرُونَ

“And We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away.”

There are three meanings of Qadr here قَدَر

1- Fixed Ratio of Hydrogen (2 molecules of hydrogen) to Oxygen ( 1 molecule of oxygen). Any slight change in the ratio of the elements, this water will turn into fire.

Both elements are Inflammable, that is they are combustible (Hydrogen and oxygen), When you combine both of them, they give you water which is used to extinguish fire, SubhanaAllah. Who has made this fixed ratio other than Allah (Subhanaahu wa Ta’ala)!

Also, there are other minerals with certain ratio in the water without which we cannot regard this water as drinkable.

2- Another meaning of Qaadir here is the certain amounts.  Every area has its own proportion of rain that  would be received. There are areas which do not receive rain and there are some where the rain is continuous. This is all by the Qadr of Allah.

3- The Certain time in which the rain is sent down, if rain is sent down in an area before it’s time, it becomes harmful  rather than beneficial.

Allah (Subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) said in Surat Az-Zuhkruf, verse 11:

 وَالَّذِي نَزَّلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً بِقَدَرٍ فَأَنشَرْنَا بِهِ بَلْدَةً مَّيْتاً كَذَلِكَ تُخْرَجُونَ

“And who sends down rain from the sky in measured amounts, and We revive thereby a dead land – thus will you be brought forth”

He sent down the rain according to what is sufficient for your crops, fruits and drinking water for yourselves and your cattle. He (Subhanaahu wa Taa’ala) does not send more than what you need such that your cattle would die and your houses would be destroyed nor less than what you need. By referring to the revival of the earth, Allah draws our attention to how he will bring  the dead back to life on the Day of Resurrection.

In Surat Al-Mursalat, Verse 20-23:

أَلَمْ نَخْلُقكُّم مِّن مَّاء مَّهِينٍ

فَجَعَلْنَاهُ فِي قَرَارٍ مَّكِينٍ

إِلَى قَدَرٍ مَّعْلُومٍ

فَقَدَرْنَا فَنِعْمَ الْقَادِرُونَ

“Did We not create you from a liquid disdained?”

“And We placed it in a firm lodging (Womb)”

“For a known extent.”

“And We determined [it], and excellent [are We] to determine.”

The Creation of man is one of the greatest signs that indicate Allah’s Greatness.

If every one were to contemplate in his creation: his eyes, ears, tongue, mouth, throat, stomach, breaths, heart, kidney, bones.  This would make the person draw closer to Allah.

Allah (Subhanaahu wa Ta’aala) reminds us of our creation from a despised water (male and female fluid) and it settles  in the womb. Allah has created the womb to protect the fluid for a fixed time (to an extent) that is for 9 months and 10 days. When the Command of Allah comes, the baby turns in the womb of his mother (the head which was facing upwards, turns downwards) and the contraction begins, the pelvic bones then separate automatically, SubhanaAllah!!

The above Verses also  means “We (Allah) Decreed and managed that embryo in that darkness and made it to develop from a sperm to a clot to a body then the soul is blown in it and there are of those babies that die before that.”

 “فَقَدَرْنَا فَنِعْمَ الْقَادِرُونَ”

Shaikh us Sa’dee (Rahimahullaah) said: “Allah praises His Holy Self, His Decree (estimation) is accompanied with Wisdom and it Deserves Praise.”

So from the above explanations and verses below, it is concluded that Allah’s Name Al Qaadir, has the meaning of decree and estimate.

Surat al-Ahqaf, verse 38:

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّهَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَلَمْ يَعْيَ بِخَلْقِهِنَّ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَى أَنْ يُحْيِيَ الْمَوْتَى بَلَى إِنَّهُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Surat al-Ma’arij, Verse 40:

فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ الْمَشَارِقِ وَالْمَغَارِبِ إِنَّا لَقَادِرُونَ

Surat al-Qiyamah, Verse 4:

بَلَى قَادِرِينَ عَلَى أَن نُّسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُ

Surat at-Tariq, Verse 8:

إِنَّهُ عَلَى رَجْعِهِ لَقَادِر
