How to attain Sincerity? (Part 4) – Sunday 27th Nov. 2011

Last week, we mentioned some ways we should adopt to attain Sincerity. This week we will discuss two more means inshaAllah!

The seventh means to attain Sincerity is by accompanying the sincere people.

Allah says in Surat Al-Kahf, Verse 28:

“And keep yourself patient (by being) with these who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His Countenance.”

This means that  (the Sincere people) have no intention except seeking Allah’s Countenance.

Shaikh as-Sa’dee (Rahimahullah) said: “Allah described them with ‘Ebadah and Ikhlas (worship and sincerity).

This verse comprises of two things:

  • A command to accompany the righteous good people,
  • and  striving hard against one-self when accompanying them and associating with them, even if they are poor; because there are many merits in accompanying them. [Tafseer al-kareem].

We, Humans, it is from our nature to  imitate or follow the example of others. Allah has created us that way.

Bear in mind. do not accompany those who call others to Da’wa and write or give speeches for the sake of fame, money, etc. You may find in those people, that there is no blessing in their teachings, in their knowledge, nor in their Da’wa.

How would you distinguish such people? These people work hard, in order that their names  be mentioned or written. When they see that their names are not written, they stop working.

It is reported on the authority of Ibn Abbas , that the Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “ The Awliya of Allah are those who if they are seen, Allah is remembered”. [Sahih al-Jawi].

i.e., They remind you of Allah and so you remember Allah.

One should not associate with the good and sincere people excessively, because this may lead to Riya’. When you see the obedient worshipers, you will be encouraged to worship Allah with them, and so this will make you to show off yourself or prove yourself to them.

The Eight means of Sincerity is to read the biography of the sincere people.

The Salafs used to say: “How many dead people, the heart is revived by their remembrance. And how many living people, their heart dies by seeing them.”

We need to read the biography of the Salafs and about their sincerity, and their anxiousness to stay firm in avoiding Riya’. We need to take the benefits from their statements. Their speech is little but it has great blessing, while the speech of other than them is more but with less Barakah.

Ibn al-Mubarak was asked: “Why don’t you sit with us after offering the salat with us?” He said, “ I accompany the Sahabahs and the Tabi’ieen.” They said, “Where are the Sahabahs and the Tabi’een?”. He replied, “ I study their quotations and their deeds. What shall I do with you. You backbite people.” [Abu Na’ieem].

If you look at the state of the Imaams in Islam, like the Imaams of  Hadeeth and Fiqh – though they are dead, among the mankinds  they are still alive. We miss only their image, while their remembrance is in their Hadeeth , praises on them is continuous. And this is the real life.
