How to attain sincerity? (part 5) – Sunday 11th Dec. 2011
9. The ninth way to attain Sincerity is: Taking the self to account and striving hard against self desire and contradicting it.
When a person performs a deed, his deed may be blemished with deficiencies and sins. Therefore, one needs to take himself to account in order to repel these sins and defects. One may perform a deed secretly but he is not sincere, he is only performing it because he likes to and not because Allah likes it. One may also perform a deed which can be seen by the people and he can be sincere.
The first sin or defect that may inflict the person after performing the deed is self-conceit and seeing the deed you performed is great in your sight. Bear in mind, that the removal of the mountains from their places is easier than the removal of the self-conceit from the heart of whom is afflicted with.
Imaam an-Nawawi (Rahimahullah) said, “Whoever admires his deed, then his deed is rendered in vain.” [Sharh al-Arba-een an-Nawawi Nawawiyyah].
In order to avoid watching ones deed and looking at it with admiration – one should see and remember the favour of Allah upon oneself, to see His grace and guidance to perform that deed. If Allah left us to ourselves, we will be destroyed because humans are ignorant and lazy by nature. Prefers to follow the lust and not to work hard. It is the source of every evil. The only good that comes is from Allah.
Therefore, don’t forget Allah’s Statement in Surat an-Noor (24:21)
And had it not been for the Grace of Allah and His Mercy on you, not one of you would ever have been pure from sins. But Allah purifies (guides to Islam) whom He wills, and Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.
10. The tenth way to attain Sincerity is to know that shaytan has no power over the sincere ones.
Therefore, fortify yourself by the legal and prescribed remembrances that are quoted by the Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam).
“The Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “ If one says 100 times ‘ La ilaha illallahu, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahulmulku wa lahulhamdu, wa Huwa `ala kulli sha’in Qadir’ its result is protection from the shaytan.”
One of the means of remedy for Riyaa’ is fortifying oneself from the shaytan, because the shaytan is the one who diverts your attention to the people and to the importance of their status.
The Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam)used to invoke Allah saying, “ O Allah! Grant my soul its piety, purify it for You are the best who can purify it. You are its Guardian and Master.” [At-Tabarani]
Also, Allah says in Surat al-Hujurat (49:7)
“But Allah has endeared the faith to you and has beautified it in your hearts, and has made disbelief, wickedness and disobedience (to Allah and His Messenger) hateful to you. They are the rightly guided ones.”
All the deeds that you do are basically a favour from Allah.
Allah says to His Prophet (Salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) in Surat al-Isra’ (17:74)
وَلَوْلا أَنْ ثَبَّتْنَاكَ لَقَدْ كِدْتَ تَرْكَنُ إِلَيْهِمْ شَيْئًا قَلِيلا
“And had we not made you stand firm, you would nearly have inclined to them a little.”
This is Allah’s grace upon His Messenger in keeping him steady on the Truth.
