Why should we learn about Allah’s Names and Attributes:
1- Allah (Subhanaahu wa Ta’ala) created the creation in order to know Him and when they know Him, they will worship Him.
The evidence for this is what Allah (Subhanaahu wa Ta’ala) says in Surat at-Talaq, Verse 12:
“It is Allah who has created seven heavens and of the earth, the like of them. [His] command descends among them so you may know that Allah is over all things competent and that Allah has encompassed all things in knowledge.”
The purpose behind own existence is to worship Allah, and the means to that noble purpose is knowing Allah (Subhanaahu wa Ta’ala)
You will not be able to worship Allah truly as He deserves if you do not know Allah (Azza wa Jal).
2- The second main reason behind studying the Names of Allah (Azza wa Jal) is because we are commanded 30 times in the Qur’an to know about Him. For example:
Surat al Baqarah, Verse 194:
“And fear Allah and know that Allah is with those who fear Him.”
What will we answer our Lord if he asks us about this obligation? Every Name or Attribute that is mentioned after the word ‘ اعلموا’. If you compare the number of times Allah has commanded us with Salat along side the command of Knowing Him, you will find that the command of Knowing Him exceeds the command to offer Salat. This shows the great importance of Knowing Our Creator.
In conclusion, The whole religion is based on knowing Allah by His Names and Attributes. He (Subhanaahu wa Ta’ala) created the creation to know Him and to worship Him. He introduced His Noble self to His Creations by sending Messengers and Books. The book (Qur’an) from its beginning till the end is about Allah, His Names and His Attributes.
Therefore, for the person who does not know Allah, his heart is considered dead though his body has life. The evidence of this is in Surat al-An’aam, Vere 122:
“And is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him light by which to walk among the people like one who is in darkness, never to emerge therefrom? Thus it has been made pleasing to the disbelievers that which they were doing.”
As you increase in knowledge, Allah will increase you in light with which you will walk amongst the people. People are in darkness unless Allah enlightens them by knowledge. There are those who are pessimistic, depressed and as soon as they know about Allah, their life is lightened up.
The foundation of Faith is knowledge about Allah, knowing Allah is a means of attaining happiness in this world and hereafter.
