How to be pleased with Allah (Part 2) Sunday, 10th June 2012
In our previous post, we discussed the 3 reasons that causes the displeasure with Allah. Among these reasons is ‘Magnifying the missing matter in our lives’. We continue with the reasons that causes the slave to magnify the missing matter in his/her lives.
The third reason for magnifying the deficient or missing matter is: Ignorance
- Ignorance about the fact that life can continue without the worldly things
- Ignorance about the fact that we can succeed in the way Allah wants and not in the way we want
- Ignorance about the fact that whatever Allah gave you is the best for you.
Our ignorance makes us greedy. We want to be promoted, or a leader, we ignore that our greed could be destruction for our reputation. You think this is your goal in life and you don’t know that this could destroy your religion; this is why Allah is not making it easy for you. Our ignorance and greediness make us live unhappy in this life. If you look at why you are unhappy it is either because of your ignorance or greediness. We are not satisfied with what Allah has given us though Allah has favored us with blessings that are best for you, because He is Al Aleem, and He knows exactly what suits you. He will not give you more than that nor will He give you less. If Allah did not give you anything you have to know that it doesn’t suit you, and it is best for you in order to reach your destiny – Paradise.
This is what we are looking for – to reach Paradise. But because of our ignorance and covetousness we always look at what people have and what we don’t have. Be pleased with what you have and Allah will be pleased with you. And there is nothing better than Allah being pleased with you. Allah being pleased with you is a greater reward than paradise. Yet we are ignorant.
Being pleased with Allah should be the first most important impact after studying each name of Allah. Studying the Names of Allah should increase our faith generally. Jundub used to say, “We were with the Prophet Muhammed youth and just boys about to attain puberty. We learned Eeman before the Qur’an and when we learnt the Qur’an we increased in faith.”
The scholars emphasized the importance of having faith. Having belief will benefit the person even if he did not recite the Qur’an BUT reciting the Qur’an, even eloquently and profusely, without faith will not benefit the person and he will be considered a hypocrite.
The evidence for this is: Narrated Abu Musa Al-Asharee that the Messenger Of Allah (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “The example of the Believer who recites the Quran is the example of the citron, its fragrance is good and its taste is good. And the example of the Believer who does not recite the Quran is the example of the date, it has no fragrance but its taste is good. and the example of the Hypocrite who recites the Quran is the example of sweet basil; its fragrance is good but its taste is bitter. And the example of the Hypocrite who does not recite the Quran is the example of the colocynth(bitter gourd), it has no fragrance and its taste is bitter.”(Sahih Al-Bukhari:Book Of Tawheed)
The hypocrites recited the Qur’an in the Dunya just like the believers but this recitation will not benefit them. Allah will provide them with a light and when they will be ordered to cross the bridge Allah will take the light of the hypocrites away and they will be in complete darkness. Allah will deal with them just as how they dealt with the light of Allah in the Dunya. They may have fasted, recited the Qur’an, etc but it won’t benefit them. Nothing will benefit a person except faith. Therefore the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the hellfire. This should make us strive to increase our faith, and it should be our main concern. We should look for means to increase in faith because this is what will benefit you and your children.
The first thing we should teach the children is faith. We need to focus on their faith, strengthen their belief, and teach them who Allah is. When they become sick, remind them that sicknesses are a mercy from Allah to expiate sins. If they want something tell them to ask Allah, As-Samad. In this way make your child’s heart attached to Allah. Yet nowadays many mothers focus on only memorization of the Qur’an. Let them memorize the Qur’an, but while doing so explain its meaning.
What kind of recitation of the Qur’an will make us increase in faith?
All of us recite the Qur’an but why don’t we see the impact of recitation of the Qur’an? Why do you see nowadays many Muslims perform Umrah, millons, but them morality has declined?
Something is wrong. There is a contradiction. There are many contests for memorization and on the other hand the morality of the people outside. This is because of how they are reciting the Qur’an. How are they reciting the Qur’an?
We want to know the way to make the Qur’an increase your faith. There is only way to make your recitation of the Qur’an increase your faith and that is recitation with Tadabbur.
What is the meaning of Tadabbur?
Tadabbur its derived from the word dubur which is the ‘end of something’. Tadabbur is to know the end result of that matter, what this matter will lead to.
Ibn ul Qayyim explains Tadabbur as, “Staring of the eyes of the heart. Upon the Qur’an AND collecting the thoughts upon understanding the meaning in order to know the end of it.”
Not the eyes of our head, our heart has eyes, this is the insight (Baseerah). It is to stare with the eye of the heart upon the Qur’an in addition to collecting your thoughts to understand the meaning of what you are reciting in order to know the end of what you am reciting. Ask yourself, what does Allah want from me with regards to belief or action? This is the end result of your contemplation.
Your contemplation will lead to four things:
1- Either you will remember something you have forgotten and your contemplation will remind you.
2- Or your contemplation will make you learn something which you ignored and didn’t know.
3- Or your contemplation will aspire and encourage you to do good deeds and to attain dignity with Allah, this will also increase you in faith.
4- Or your contemplation will make you fear the punishment of Allah and receive admonition
These are four impacts of the Tadabbur. And you will not have these four impacts unless you did Tadabbur with your heart; an attentive heedful heart, collecting your heart and mind upon what you are reading, You will recite a verse many times. Reciting one verse with Tadabbur is better for you than finishing the whole Qur’an without Tadabbur. You are thinking about that verse, asking yourself what Allah wants from you, how should I act? One verse which makes you think like that is better for you than finishing the whole Qur’an without Tadabbur. People compete to finish reciting the Qur’an and there is no effect of the Qur’an on their hearts.
A man came to the Prophet (salla Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) and said “O Messenger of Allah, You have been unjust in distributing the booty” The Prophet said “If I am not Just who will be Just among the creation?” When the man went away the Prophet said “From among the offspring of this man, people will come out from my nation reciting the Qur’an profusely but it will not exceed their throats. They will come out of the religion quickly like an arrow coming out of a game” (Bukhari)
Because these people recite without understanding as soon as they are affected in their religion they will come out of it.
Purify your intention when you hold the Qur’an. Are you seeking guidance? Then the Qur’an will be a guidance. You seeking healing or mercy? You will have as much as you want.
What is the way to Tadabbur?
Allah sent the Qur’an down to worship him through the Qur’an to establish the servitude to worship Allah. To know about Him from the Qur’an. This should be your first goal when you recite the Qur’an.
What is the meaning of Tilawah?
Allah ordered us to recite the Qur’an with Tarteel. That is to recite the Qur’an in a slow, rhythmic way with a beautiful voice. Tilawah will help you make Tadabbur, slowly you be reciting the verse in a rhythmic way. This was the Sunnah of the Prophet when he was reciting the Qur’an. Ayesha said the Prophet would recite the Qur’an in a long slow mode even longer than a surah which was longer than it.
You may read and not understand, but read again and again, for Shaytaan is awaiting discouraging you. Immediately ask Allah to help you, for He is the One who teaches the Qur’an and no one but He can make you understand. If you are truthful, Allah will be truthful with you, He will not forsake you and will Help you and enlighten you.
Reciting the Qur’an with Tadabbur and understanding the meaning is the light for you, given to you to act upon the Qur’an and to increase in your faith.
