Importance of studying the names of Allah and His attributes (Part 2). Oct 7th 2012
Posted by Enlightenment into Islam Center
The religion of Islam comprises of three matters: Islam, Eeman and Ihsan.
The most important pillar of Islam is the Shahadah and the most important pillar of Eeman is the belief in Allah . They both share the belief of Allah.
What is the belief in Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala)? It comprises of four things:
1) Believe in the existence of Allah- The creation points to the creator
2) Belief in the Ruboobiyah- Allah created us, sustains us and everything is in His hand.
3) Belief in the Uloohiyah- No one deserves to be worshipped except Allah
4) Belief in His Names and Attributes
The most important of these four are belief in the Names and Attributes of Allah for if you believe in them you will believe in the existence of Allah, His Ruboobiyah, and you will single Him alone in worship.
So we conclude that our religion is based on knowing Allah by His names and attributes. This is why we are studying them.
The third matter which shows the importance of knowing Allah by His names and attributes is that many rewards in the Qur’an are explained by the names of Allah. For example, “If you do such and such Allah is Ghafoor ur Raheem” Or “If you avoid this then Allah is Aleem ul Hakeem”
Example: Surah An-Nisa’ Verse 149:
إِن تُبْدُوا خَيْرًا أَوْ تُخْفُوهُ أَوْ تَعْفُوا عَن سُوءٍ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَفُوًّا قَدِيرًا
Whether you (mankind) disclose (by good words of thanks) a good deed (done to you in the form of a favour by someone), or conceal it, or pardon an evil,
verily, Allah is Ever Oft-Pardoning, All-Powerful.
What do you understand from this? You may forgive someone and you do not have the ability to punish him. But if you pardon him Allah will pardon you and deal with him with His name Al Qadeer. You pardon him because you want Allah to pardon you, and Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) is all able to show that man a lesson.
Example: Surah Al-Ma’idah Verse 34:
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ تَابُوا مِن قَبْلِ أَن تَقْدِرُوا عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِي
Except for those who repent before they fall into your power: in that case, know that Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
The context of the verse is about those who make mischief in the land. If they repent before you grasp them then you should forgive them because Allah has forgiven them.
So there are many commands in the Qur’an with a name of Allah instead of mentioning the reward of fulfilling this command. This is in order to explain the names of Allah.
The Qu’ran is full of Allah’s names, attributes and actions. It explains how to behave and deal with the people.
Example. In Surah Talaq:
“And fear Allah your Lord (O Muslims)..”
“And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty).”
“And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine.”
“and whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make his matter easy for him.”
“and whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will remit his sins from him, and will enlarge his reward.”
So, if you fear Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) in all your affairs see how Allah will deal with you:
1) He will bring you out of every difficulty
2) He will provide from sources you never imagined
3) And He will make your life easy
4) And He will expiate your sins
5) And He will enlarge your rewards for you
Have you seen a Lord more generous than Allah? For one action you receive multiple rewards! So apply this to your life. Fear Allah in all your affairs, with everyone you deal with and you will receive these rewards. IF you just fear Him, this is how Allah deals with you.
A fourth matter is that the Names and Attributes show us how Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) deals with his Awliya and how he deals with his enemies.
Example: In Surah Qasas Verses: 76 to 83.
In these verses there are 3 categories of people:
1) Qarun and his soldiers
2) Those who admired Qarun and thought he was a fortunate man.
3) Those who had been given knowledge
How did Allah deal with each category?
1) Allah caused them to sink in the earth
2) Allah dealt with them with His forbearance and they did not share the punishment of Qarun and his soldiers. They thanked Allah for saving them for it was out of His graciousness.
3) Allah rewarded them.
We learn from the story of Qarun that we should never be deceived by the good condition of people though they may be disobeying Allah. Allah may be giving them respite.
The fifth matter is that you may find many names of Allah mentioned in context to show the greatness of the Qur’an, like the verses in Surah Hashr.
The sixth matter which shows the importance of studying the names and attributes of Allah is that the actions of the slave depend on how much he knows about Allah.
In Surah Fatir Verse 28:
وَمِنَ النَّاسِ وَالدَّوَابِّ وَالأَنعَام مُخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَانُه ُُ كَذَلِكَ إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ غَفُور
”And of men and Ad-Dawab (moving living creatures, beasts, etc.), and cattle, in like manner of various colours. It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah. Verily, Allah is All-Mighty, Oft-Forgiving.”
Only the knowledgeable people fear Allah because they know Him. The more you know Allah the more you will fear Him, trust Him and love Him. Everything depends on your knowledge of Allah.
Example: Sincerity is to single out Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) with worship such that your heart will not be diverted to anyone else, seeking the praise of Allah and not the people. You will only reach this state when you have knowledge about Allah. When you know that the people own nothing, and that Allah rewards and punishes.
If your daughter may fall sick and you really believe Allah is Shafi, before you run to the doctor you will ask Allah to cure her. And when you do that Allah will immediately guide you to the best cure.
How many problems do we face in our houses and how many times do we run to Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala)? IF you have a problem with anyone in your life you should go to Allah because the hearts of the people are in Allah’s hand. Allah is all able to change your situation. Everything in this life starts from Allah. But only the one who knows Allah by his names and attributes will run to him.
We’ll continue in the next post insha’Allah about of some the impacts of a few names of Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) .
