Ruling on Congratulating & eating food which is given during, Christmas,New years, Ashoora,Birthdays, etc. – Sunday, 9th Dec. 2012

What is the ruling regarding eating the food prepared for these specific occasions?

Al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah in Saudi Arabia was asked the same question and they said, “It is not permissible for a Muslim to eat the food of Jews, Christians, and the Mushrikoon  prepared on their feasts. It is also not permissible for Muslims to accept their gifts on their feasts, for this includes honoring them and cooperating with them in observing their rituals, promoting their Bid`ahs (innovations in religion), and sharing their happiness on the occasion of their feasts. This may lead to adopting their feasts or at least to exchanging invitations for food and exchanging presents during each other’s feasts. This could lead to Fitnah (temptation) and Bid`ahs. It was authentically reported that the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu alaihi wa sallam) said “Whoever introduces anything into this matter of ours that is not part of it, will have it rejected.”[Sahih Al-Bukhari,2697] It is also not permissible to give them presents on their feasts. What is the ruling on Greeting them during their Festivals?

Ibn al-Qayyim – (Rahimahullaah)– said,

Congratulating the kuffaar on the rituals that belong only to them is haraam by consensus, as is congratulating them on their festivals and fasts by saying ‘A happy festival to you’ or ‘May you enjoy your festival,’ and so on. If the one who says this has been saved from kufr, it is still forbidden. It is like congratulating someone for prostrating to the cross, or even worse than that. It is as great a sin as congratulating someone for drinking wine, or murdering someone, or having illicit sexual relations, and so on. Many of those who have no respect for their religion fall into this error; they do not realize the offensiveness of their actions. Whoever congratulates a person for his disobedience or bid’ah or kufr exposes himself to the wrath and anger of Allaah” [Ahkaam Ahl al-Dhimmah]

Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen (Rahimahullaah) comments on this saying, Congratulating the kuffaar on their religious festivals is haraam to the extent described by Ibn al-Qayyim because it implies that one accepts or approves of their rituals of kufr, even if one would not accept those things for oneself. But the Muslim should not accept the rituals of kufr or congratulate anyone else for them, because Allaah does not accept any of that at all. [Majmoo’ah Fataawa wa Rasaa’il]

Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) tells us in Surah Maa’idah Verse 2:

وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ

Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.

There is transgression worse than what these people are doing. They are abusing Allah!!

How, after knowing this, can we encourage them in their evil deed?

Shaikh Bin Baz (Rahimahullaah) was asked about accepting food during Ashoora, He said, “It is not permissible to take part in that matter. It is not permissible to eat or even drink from that. The meat that is given is unlawful to eat because they are slaughtering on the name other than Allah. This is major shirk and this meat is Haraam. You cannot eat it or give it to anyone to eat it”

This is in consensus with all the Ulamaa that it is not permissible to exchange gifts or food or congratulate during these festivals of the disbelievers and people of innovation. Every religion has its own feast; we are not supposed to participate in these feasts. Be careful, the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) said: “… and every innovation is misguidance and all misguidance is in the Hellfire.”[an-Nasaa’ee  1/224]

So we  need to kindly decline their invitations, food, gifts etc. If everyone is silent no one will know that their wrong.
