The Names of Allah: Al-Hakam, Al-Haakim, Al-Hakeem – Part 10 (3 of 3) – Sunday 20th January, 2013

We will continue where we left off in our previous post and we will continue with Surah Al-Ma’idah with the 10th call to the believers.

The 10th call to the believers is in Verse 87:

O you who believe! Make not unlawful the Taiyyibaat (all that is good as regards foods, things, deeds, beliefs, persons, etc.) which Allaah has made lawful to you, and transgress not. Verily, Allaah does not like the transgressors.

Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) made many things lawful to us, Don’t make it prohibited on yourself. In the beginning of the Surah Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) talks about the opposite. This means that we are not supposed to make the lawful, unlawful and the unlawful, lawful. This is the RIGHT of Allaah. Only Allaah, Al Hakam, is the One who makes things impermissible and permissible. We have to be careful; otherwise we will be considered transgressors.

In the next verse Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) says:

And eat of the things which Allah has provided for you, lawful and good, and fear Allah in Whom you believe.

The basic principle concerning all foods, drinks and clothing according to Shaikh ‘Uthaymeen (Rahimahullaah): They are generally permissible UNLESS a proof comes from the Qur’aan and Sunnah that says it is Haraam.

Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) says in Surah Baqarah Verse 29:

He it is Who created for you all that is on earth.

People who are on diets not because of sickness, but because they want to be slim make certain kinds of food unlawful to them. This is a kind of transgression.

Many Muslims nowadays make a sip of wine halal or to use it to cook , but Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) has forbidden wine in large or small amounts so He says in Verse 90:

O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, Al-Ansab, and Al-Azlam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaitan’s (Satan) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful.

Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) joined drinking wine with sacrificing on stone alters and divining arrows, all which are forms of SHIRK, to show the gravity of the sin.

Ibn ‘Umar (Radhia-Allaahu ‘anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allaah (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Every intoxicant is Khamr and every intoxicant is Unlawful (haraam)...” [Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud, No. 3671, Sunan Timidhi and others]

The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Whatever intoxicates in large quantities, then a small quantity of it is forbidden.” [Related by al-Tirmidhī, Abū Dawūd, al-Nasā’ī, Ibn Mājah, al-Dāraqutnī, and Ahmad with an authentic chain of transmission]

The 12th call to the believers is in Verse 94:

O you who believe! Allaah will certainly make a trial of you with something in (the matter of) the game that is well within reach of your hands and your lances, that Allaah may test who fears Him unseen. Then whoever transgresses thereafter, for him there is a painful torment.

The 13th Call to the believers in Verse 95:

O you who believe! Kill not game while you are in a state of Ihram for Hajj or ‘Umrah (pilgrimage), and whosoever of you kills it intentionally, the penalty is an offering, brought to the Ka’bah, of an eatable animal (i.e. sheep, goat, cow, etc.) equivalent to the one he killed, as adjudged by two just men among you; or, for expiation, he should feed Masakin (poor persons), or its equivalent in Saum (fasting), that he may taste the heaviness (punishment) of his deed. Allaah has forgiven what is past, but whosoever commits it again, Allaah will take retribution from him. And Allaah is All-Mighty, All-Able of Retribution.

Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) warned us twice about hunting the games in the state of Ihram!

The 14th Call to the believers Verse 101:

O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble. But if you ask about them while the Qur’aan is being revealed, they will be made plain to you. Allaah has forgiven that, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.

After Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) has mentioned the unlawful and lawful He gives us a ruling. Don’t ask unnecessary questions! Don’t be extreme! Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) ordered Bani Israel to slaughter a cow, any cow, but they kept asking unnecessary questions and made it difficult on themselves.

The 15th Call is in Verse 105:

O you who believe! Take care of your own selves  [do righteous deeds, fear Allaah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allaah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)]. If you follow the right guidance and enjoin what is right (Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden) no hurt can come to you from those who are in error. The return of you all is to Allaah, then He will inform you about (all) that which you used to do.

However, keep in mind that your Eeman will not be perfect unless you enjoin the good and forbid the evil. This is a statement by Shaikh Sa’di (Rahimahullaah).

The 16th and final call is in Verse 106:

O you who believe! When death approaches any of you, and you make a bequest, then take the testimony of two just men of your own folk or two others from outside, if you are travelling through the land and the calamity of death befalls you. Detain them both after As-Salat (the prayer), (then) if you are in doubt (about their truthfulness), let them both swear by Allaah (saying): “We wish not for any worldly gain in this, even though he (the beneficiary) be our near relative. We shall not hide Testimony of Allaah, for then indeed we should be of the sinful.”
