The Names of Allaah: Al-Hakam, Al-Haakim & Al-Hakeem – Part 12 (1 of 2) – Sunday 14th April, 2013
Shaikh Abdur-Razzaq al-Badr (hafidhahullaah) in his book Fiqh Asmaa Al Husna said explaining the name Al-Hakeem, “To Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) belongs the perfect wisdom in His creation, His commands and in His Shari’ (law). He puts the things in their right places and in their right status such that He has not left any chance for anybody from among the people of falsehood to question Him or defame His wisdom.”
When one knows that Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) is The All-Wise, and that He perfected everything and put it in it’s right place, then one must believe that whatever He decreed is the best. This is because He is Rabb Al-Alameen, Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem, He will not decree anything except that it will be good for you.
People don’t receive the Qadr of Allaah with pleasure due to the lack of faith in the name of Allaah Al-Hakeem.
Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) will not decree things except:
- To show you your reality .
To show you who you are, to show you your defects. Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) may decree a situation for a person in which he realises that he is a jealous person or that he is a miser etc.
- To elevate you in ranks with Him
If the person is righteous and accepts the decree patiently with a contented heart, then Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) will elevate him in ranks. But if he is a sinner, then these decrees are like a punishment. Even in the punishment, there is good behind it. If the person has insight he will understand that it is as if Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) is telling him to quit a particular sin through this decree because the punishment is always the same nature of the sin. The person will then know that he should quit his sin and repent. Accordingly, Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) will elevate him. If the person does not realise this, the same test will be repeated again and again until he learns a lesson from it. Allaah, Rabb Al-Alameen, loves that we are purified from our sins and that we are elevated with Him such that we will be suitable to be in Paradise. We should purify ourselves and it will not happen except through trials.
- To increase you in certainty
When a person sees the impact of Allaah’s wisdom in all his decrees then his faith will increase.
The name Al-Hakeem is a very important name that cures us from the whisper of the Shaytaan. The Qadr of Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) is something which we don’t know the wisdom behind. Because it is hidden, the Shaytaan will take the chance and whisper to us. He will begin to suggest evil thoughts about Allaah. When we know Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) by His name Al-Hakeem we will be able to easily repel the whispers of Shaytaan by reminding ourselves that Allah is Al-Hakeem and everything He decrees is out of His Perfect Wisdom and for good reason.
Another way we can repel the whisper of the Shaytaan is Isti’aadhah (Seeking refuge with Allaah). We should seek refuge with Allaah from the Shaytaan because he will come often to us. We should make du’aa, asking Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) to guide us and keep us firm. This is Ibaadah Istihdah, which many people don’t practice. Just resort to Allaah with your heart and ask Him to guide you.
‘Ali (Radhia-Allaahu ‘anhu) said, “The Messenger of Allaah, (Salla-Allaahu alaihi wa sallam), said to me,’Say: ‘O Allaah, guide me and put me right.'” [Muslim]
When a person is shooting an arrow and he wants it to hit the aim. This is As-Sadad – to hit the target. We have to ask Allaah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) to guide us and to make us take the right decisions.
The meaning of the name Al-Hakeem needs to be repeated again and again until it is established in our hearts.
