Importance of Studying the Names of Allah and His Attributes – Sunday 8th Dhul-Hijjah,1434 ( 13th October, 2013)

The noblest deed that one should exert his utmost in, in his whole life is to know about Allah, our Lord. This is the noblest action, and seeking the countenance of Allah is the noblest goal.
Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) brought us into this life in order to know Him. We will not be able to worship Him if we do not know Him.
In beginning of Surah Baqarah verses 2 – 5, Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) praised the believers and their first description is that they believe in the unseen.
The greatest unseen to us is Allah. Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) says that they are the Muflihoon, successful ones.
Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) loves that the slaves worship him by His Names and Attributes.
For example: Allah is Ar-Rahman (The Most Beneficent) , Ar-Raheem (The Most Merciful). He loves who is merciful amongst His slaves.
Allah is As-Sitteer. He is the one who conceals, He loves those who conceal the sins of others.
If we do not know who Allah is, we will not be able to worship him,
Another Important point of studying Allah’s names and attributes is that knowing Allah by His names and attributes will help you explain the qadr (decree) of Allah correctly. You will be able to interpret the actions of Allah with you no matter what situation you go through. If you are ignorant about Allah you will not be able to understand why certain things happen to you.
We say in Surah Al-Fatihah,
الحمد لله رب العلمين
”All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the ‘Aalamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).”
We praise Allah every day in every prayer.
الرب He is my Lord, the One who created me, provided me with the means of living in the dunya, nurturing me with His perfect attributes, with His mercy, wisdom, kindness, etc. He is bringing us up. We were in the lowest state of faith, little knowledge but Allah makes us go through situations to show us the impact of His attributes, to show us that He is able to help us, to give us, to cure us, He is Forbearing, Almighty.
For instance Allah may deprive you from something which you love so much, like performing Hajj. Every year we long to go for Hajj but we aren’t able. Something will happen later in life and Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) will show you the reason, the wisdom behind why He deprived you, such that when you go through any deprivation in the future, you will know that Allah is All-Wise, thus you will be explaining the actions of Allah correctly.
Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) will show you His actions again and again until your faith increases and yourself will be purified from all doubts and sicknesses. This is the nurturing of Allah! Those who do not understand the ربوبية (Ruboobiyah) the actions of Allah, there is a barrier between the information and their hearts, and it is a very thick barrier. We have to struggle hard to know more about Allah such that this barrier between our hearts and knowledge will be thin.
You may be suspicious of someone and Allah will make her speak with an answer that clears your doubt about her, making you feel bad for suspecting her. This is to tell you not to suspect others.
People think negatively. They hear the phone ringing and they think maybe they will be informed that someone died. But Allah shows us something good instead, in order to get rid of this negativity from our minds.
If a person remains thinking negatively he may reach a state where he thinks bad about Allah. The Shaytaan has steps, you may be suspecting people now but gradually you may be doubting Allah.
Think good, expect good and change negative thoughts to positive thoughts. If you repel the whisper of the Shaytaan you will overcome these negative thoughts, but if you surrender to the whispers of Shaytaan he will overpower you and take you further such that a person might even despair of Allah’s mercy.
There are some people who only pinpoint the bad side. Although the bright side of things may outweigh the negative, they only see the dark side od things. Look at the bright side of things in life.
Nothing in this life is perfect. Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) is the only perfect One.
Let’s say you are going through a certain problem. You go to hear a lecture and the subject from beginning till the end is the solution to your problem. This is an indication of Allah’s mercy to you.
There is no one as merciful as Allah. His mercy is so vast and it extends to every one of us. Therefore think good, expect good from Allah, especially when you go through trials in your life.
Many incidents occur around us, we need to see through them.
Sometimes we go through distress and we are told that Abu Huraira (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: ”Whoever removes from a Believer a hardship from the hardships of this life (the dunya), Allah (God) will remove from him a hardship from the hardships of the Day of Judgment, and whoever makes a difficult affair easy, Allah will make things easy for him in this life and the Hereafter..” [Saheeh: Recorded by Muslim (no. 2699), at-Tirmidhee (no. 1425), and Imaam Ahmad. Shaykh al-Albaanee declared it to be authentic in “ Saheeh Sunan at-Tirmidhee ” (no. 1574). ]
We should think why we were made to hear this hadith.
An old lady who was suffering from kidney failure was doing kidney dialyses and the doctors informed her that it was better to have a kidney transplant. They searched and found a young woman who was ready to give her kidney. They arranged to pay her the money after the operation.
The old lady slept beside the young woman and woke up hearing the woman’s cry. She asked her why she had been crying and the young woman replied that had it not been for her poverty she wouldn’t have to cut her body.
The old lady felt pity for her and asked her how much was the amount that they had promised to pay her. The next morning she called her son and informed him to give the young woman the money instantly, and then told the woman that she was free and she didn’t want her kidney any more.
The young woman left and when the lady’s kidney was checked, it was found that both the kidneys were working normally. She was in distress and removed the distress of someone else. Allah will aid you, if you act upon His command.
Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) makes us go through these situations such that our certainty increases.
There was an old lady whose children decided to find someone who would perform hajj on her behalf and they found an 80 year old African man, who cried yearly to perform Hajj, to perform Hajj for her.
Allah is able to manage your life in the best way, never despair in Allah’s mercy, have hope and think good of Allah. Allah is showing us these incidents so that we have faith in him and to think good about him.
It is From the Qur’aan and Sunnah that we will know about Allah.
Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) says in Surat Yūnus: 44,
إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَظْلِمُ النَّاسَ شَيْئًا وَلَٰكِنَّ النَّاسَ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ
”Truly! Allah wrongs not mankind in aught; but mankind wrong themselves.”
Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) doesn’t wrong the people even a tiny bit, the people wrong themselves. Allah is merciful and kind and we need to think well of Him. We should wonder what we did wrong that caused such and such to happen. The believer should check himself whenever a calamity befalls him.
Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) says in Surat ‘Āli `Imrān: 54,
وَمَكَرُوا وَمَكَرَ اللَّهُ
”And they (disbelievers) plotted [to kill ‘Iesa (Jesus) ], and Allah planned too..”
This is a restricted attribute of Allah. Allah plots against those who do evil, not against everyone.
Whoever plots evil, it will return against him.
A woman’s husband got another wife. She did magic so that her husband would divorce his second wife. Allah cured this second wife from the magic and when the husband realized it was the first wife who planned this, he divorced her and her plan backfired.
أَفَأَمِنُوا مَكْرَ اللَّهِ
“Did they then feel secure against the Plan of Allah?”
[Surah Al-‘A`rāf : 99]
Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing. He is watching our hearts. He knows what is in our hearts so we need to be careful.
The people of the garden in Surah Al-Qalam: Verse 17- 32, plotted at night to prevent fruits from the poor. While they were sleeping, Allah destroyed their garden. They only intended evil, they hadn’t even carried it out yet.
We are not dealing with people, we are dealing with Allah. We have to understand every name and attribute of Allah.
Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala) says Surat Taha: 124,
وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَن ذِكْرِي فَإِنَّ لَهُ مَعِيشَةً ضَنكًا
“But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur’aan nor acts on its orders, etc.) verily, for him is a life of hardship..”
The one who is in distress is the person who doesn’t know about Allah. When you know about Allah, your Lord, you will always be happy and at rest.
