The Names of Allah: Ar-Rahmaan, Ar-Raheem – 12th January, 2014

One of the noble obligations we have to fulfill is learning about Allah. It is not optional, rather  it is obligatory.
Allah brought us to this Dunya to know Him, knowing Him will allow us to worship Him hence fulfilling the purpose behind our creation.

If our exit and entrance wherever we go is truthful ( صدق ), Allah will grant us all the good and blessings. It is important to check your heart whenever you leave your house and enter a place. It should be truthful entrance and truthful exit

Allah commanded the prophet to say the following Dua in Surah Israa’ verse 80:

وَقُلْ رَبِّ أَدْخِلْنِي مُدْخَلَ صِدْقٍ وَأَخْرِجْنِي مُخْرَجَ صِدْقٍ وَاجْعَلْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ سُلْطَانًا نَصِيرًا

“And say, ‘My Lord! ‘Admit me with a worthy entrance, and bring me out with a worthy departure, and render me a favourable authority from Yourself.’”

Allah told us about His name Ar-Rahmaan الرحمن profusely in the Qur’an, He mentioned it 16 times in Surah Maryam. This is why we are studying Surah Maryam along with the name Ar-Rahmaan.

In mentioning the stories of the noble Prophets and Messengers:

1-   It is form of  praising for Allah as He is the one who chose them and sent them.

2- It is  mentioning the favours of Allah upon mankind.

3- It makes the people believe in noble PRophets and Messengers, love them and take them as examples.

What is it about Maryam (‘Alaayhas-sallaam) that Allah joined His mercy with her story?

‘Maryam’  literally means ألعابده (The Worshipper). The story of Maryam (‘Alaayhas-Sallaam) begins in Surah Maryam  from Verse 16 to 40.

Verse 16:

The first action Maryam did was ‘ انتبذت ‘ which literally means to throw away a particular thing like it is not wanted. It is to say as though, she didn’t want or like anybody, she just wanted to be with Allah. She withdrew herself in seclusion in the direction of the east since the Qiblah at that time was in the east.

Verse 17:

Maryam (Alayhassallaam) had kept a screen between her and the people  because she wanted to worship Allah in seclusion and in humility, this action of hers indicated her sincerity. While she was doing so, Allah sent her Jibreel (‘Alayhissaallaam) in the form of a Perfect man (a perfect human being). When he entered upon her, the first act of worship she did was إستعاذه (Seeking refuge in Allaah). She was afraid that this perfect human whom she thought was a man may touch her with harm and she feared for herself. She was a single woman, staying away from her family, alone with a perfect man, she feared temptation from herself. This indicates her chastity.  Upon seeing him, she immediately sought refuge in ‘ArRahmaan’.

Why did she use Allah’s name ‘Ar-Rahmaan’?

1) Maryam (‘Alayhassallaam) knew the meaning of ArRahmaan. She was asking the mercy from Allah because one of the meanings of ArRahmaan is the One who drives evil away.

2) The second reason was to remind him  to be merciful with her, that she’s a weak woman who is alone. She also reminded him of piety. She knew that the pious person will not commit wrong and harm the people. That’s why she immediately reminded him of mercy and Taqwa (piety). Ibn Kathir (Rahimahullaah) said, “Seeking refuge in ArRahmaan and reminding the person of Taqwa is an easy way to repel evil

Guarding ones chastity when the means of fornications are available is one of the noble deeds according to Allah. Whenever Allah describes Maryam in the Qur’an, He always says أحسن فرج (guarded her chastity). This shows that it is a great deed.

Lesson to be learnt from this verse:

We learn that whenever we fear something we need to immediately seek refuge in Allah, ArRahmaan. One of the major sicknesses that people face nowadays is fear. Fear dominates the hearts of the people to the extent that they are afraid of everything. If a person does not cure himself from this sickness from the beginning, it may become an obsession for him. He may not be able to do anything and this becomes a serious state. There are people who don’t fast because they are AFRAID of hunger and thirst. There are people who don’t perform Hajj because they are afraid of the crowd. There are people who do not travel because they are scared of planes. This causes hardship to a person. Although he is able, rich, young and strong but he is afraid.

The remedy from this sickness is to seek refuge in Allah, sometimes we do so but are still afraid and the evil does not go. This is because there are conditions to be fulfilled when seeking refuge in Allah:

1) Knowledge about Allah.

The more you know about Allah by His Names and Attributes, the stronger your Isti’aadhah (إستعاذه) will be. Maryam knew who ArRahmaan was so she immediately used the name in repelling evil from herself. Most of us don’t know who Allah, the one whom we are seeking protection from, is. Fear is controlling the people and not making them concentrate on their Ibadah. If you see someone afraid, tell them about Allah, tell them who ArRahmaan is and the impact of His mercy. If Allah is merciful to all the animals, disbelievers and believers then how will he not be merciful to you? Ever since you were born he has been taking care of you. Most of us don’t know who Allah is, that is why when we say أعوذ بالله there is no effect.

2) Bad Thoughts.  People say أعوذ بالله and the whisper of the Shaytan comes. He fills the person with thoughts such as “maybe Allah won’t answer your dua, there’s a possibility”.We need to expect good from Allah, we need to think good about Him. He will be for you as you think of Him. Don’t say اعوذ بالله and expect bad from Allah. (Thinking good about Allaah) حسن ظن بالله is an important condition.Waswaas (whispers) and the Shaytan comes to righteous people too. It is Allah’s way of nurturing them.
As soon as you discover any sickness in your heart you should immediately seek refuge in Allah. Many people think refuge should be sought only for Shaytanic whispers. They don’t seek refuge from the شر النفس (Evil of the self). Jealousy, pride, hypocrisy, etc are evils of the heart. We need to seek refuge in Allah from them too.
How many times a day do we seek refuge in Allah? This Ibadah has been abandoned! We don’t practice it although it is a very great act of worship in Allah’s sight. It should accompany us in all our states during the day. We should seek  Allah’s refuge from the evil of the situation we are going through. If you pass by any hardship or distress in your life then you need to immediately seek refuge in Allah.

3) Since Isti’aadhah is a an Ibadah, it needs to be done with a heedful heart. Your heart should be attentive. You are running to Allah who will protect you from the evil.

In Surah Ghafir Verses 26 – 27:
Firaun was one of the most tyrannical people in the entire world. When he threatened to kill Musa (‘Alayhissallam), Musa immediately said He sought refuge in Allah الرب because no one can touch you with harm without Allah’s permission. Everyone’s fore lock is in Allah’s hand, He is the one directing the people. No one can do anything without His will. We are under His control, no matter what people say or do, seek refuge in Allah.
This was the attitude of the Prophets and Messengers, they sought refuge in Allah when any fear came to them.

If you fulfil these three conditions, you will see how Allah will send rest and tranquility from where you could have never imagined.

Moving back to the Story of Maryam,

After she sought refuge in Allah, Jibreel saw the fear in her and said in Verse 19:

قَالَ إِنَّمَا أَنَا رَسُولُ رَبِّكِ لِأَهَبَ لَكِ غُلَامًا زَكِيًّا

He said, ‘I am only a messenger of your Lord that I may give you a pure son.’

The name الرب is used because it gives  tranquility because He, Allah is the Protector, Nurturer etc
Jibril (‘Alayhissallam) says he has a gift for her from her ‘Rabb’, a purified son, pure from all bad characters and having all good characters. This is a great gift.  Maryam (‘Alayhassallam) replied in verse 20:

قَالَتْ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِي غُلَامٌ وَلَمْ يَمْسَسْنِي بَشَرٌ وَلَمْ أَكُ بَغِيًّا

She said, ‘How shall I have a child seeing that no human being has ever touched me, nor have I been unchaste?’

The word يمسسني is an indication for physical relation between a man and woman.

Verse 21:

He said, ‘So shall it be. Your Lord says, “It is simple for Me.” And so that We may make him a sign for mankind and a mercy from Us, and it is a matter [already] decided.’

The first thing Allah said:    هُوَ عَلَيَّ هَيِّنٌ

It is very easy for Allah to give her a son without a father. The above statement of Allah indicates:

1) The full ability of Allah

2) The means have no effect independently.
No matter what means you take, they will not be effective without the will of Allah. In the case of Maryam she didn’t need a husband to have a child. Allah is showing us extraordinary matters in order to make our hearts attached to Him and no one else. He is The Lord of the means, He brings the means into existence and makes them effective. You may take the means but fail because Allah didn’t will it to be succesful for you, He is Wise and All Knowing. He knows what is good for you and what suits you.
Let your heart be attached to The Lord of the means.

What is the Wisdom behind  Allah giving Maryam (‘Alayhassallam) a son?

  • Allah gave her a son as a sign to man, to indicate Allah’s ability.

And so that We may make him a sign for mankind

Allah created Adam without a father and mother, He created Eve from the rib of a male without a female. He created their progeny from female and male. He created Jesus from a female without a male.
Allah is all able but the Christians don’t understand that. They underestimate the ability of Allah. If they know who He is they will accept that Jesus is only a Prophet immediately.

  • As a Mercy to himself, his mother and everyone

and a mercy from Us

Allah made him a Prophet and one of the best messengers. He elevated his mothers rank, by having Eesa, she gained this high rank, nobility and honour. Eesa is a guidance for the people. When they’re guided they will attain happiness in this dunya and Aakhirah. This is how ‘Eesa (‘Alayhissallam) was a mercy to himself, his mother and everyone. This is the greatest mercy of Allah and it is not only with Eesa. All the Prophets and Messengers are an impact of Allah’s mercy with mankind.

  • This has been something decreed.

and it is a matter [already] decided

This has been something decreed, and had to be accepted. Maryam (‘Alayhissallaam) accepted this and Jibreel blew into the opening of her garment. This went in the womb of Maryam (‘Alayhissallam) and she conceived him.

Verse 22:

Thus she conceived him, then withdrew with him to a distant place.

She withdrew to a very far place where no one can see her. She was a single, pregnant woman and was afraid of her people.

Lesson to be learnt from this verse:

We learn from this that as soon as the calamity comes, you need to stay away from people. When the shock comes you may act ignorantly and lose your balance. You should immediately stay away from people. Allah is telling us the detail of her action so that we may take lessons. She is in a severe distress. She went far, and stayed away from people. This should be temporary because long seclusion will give the chance for Shaytan to overcome you. When you regain your balance, you may go back.

 Verse 23:

The birth pangs brought her to the trunk of a date palm.

The labour pain drove her to the trunk of a tree.

Lesson to be learnt from this verse:

We are not supposed to wish death for ourselves. We learn from this not to let severe pain make us wish for death. The Shaytan will overcome you if you surrender to him. The Shaytan didn’t overpower her because she is protected from the Shaytan because of the Dua’ of her mother before she gave birth to her.

Verse 23:

Thereupon he1 called her from below her [saying,] ‘Do not grieve!

Don’t be sad. Grief and sadness will paralyse a person. A person who is in extreme sadness cannot think or do anything. It will cut your way to Allah. Some interpreters said, “Grief stops a person from walking to Allah”

Your Lord has made a spring to flow at your feet.

This river was dry and Allah made the water flow in it for her according to Ibn Abbas (Radia Allaahu ‘anhu).

Lesson to be learnt from this verse:

Look at the blessings of Allah. When the calamity comes, look around you, at the positive side of your problem. There is no calamity that is sent except that it is sent with a blessing. You have to look for this blessing. Try to see the bright side of the problem. Allah may test his slave with a trial to purify him or to save him from a bigger destruction such that later you will know that this trial was the greatest blessing” – Is’haaq

So many people face problems in their life and only later do they realize that hadn’t it been for this trial they wouldn’t have attained a certain blessing later on. If you can’t see a bright side then show patience, your patience is the brighter side as you will be abundantly rewarded for it on the day of judgment. Allah is so merciful with us. There is a mercy  even  in the trials.

Verse 25:

Shake the trunk of the palm tree

Lesson to be learnt from this verse:

Take the means even if you are weak. Show Allah your truthfulness and He will help you. Who can shake the trunk of a tree? Not even a strong man can do that. This is to teach us a lesson to take the means, show Allah truthfulness and Allah will make your action blessed.

Verse 26:

Eat, drink, and be comforted

Lesson to be learnt from this verse:

When a person is sad he loses his appetite. The solution is to eat and drink when you are sad, this gives you strength in the body. The person will usually be spiritually down so be happy. Look at the blessings of Allah. Be happy with these blessings.

Then if you see any human, say, “Indeed I have vowed a fast to the All-beneficent, so I will not speak to any human today.” ’

Lesson to be learnt from this verse:

Don’t allow them to talk to you nor you talk to them.
AsSa’di said, “She will be at rest” Silence was an act of worship at that time, and they vowed the obstinate of talking. This was abrogated later on.There is no benefit in talking to the people when you are in the middle of a distress. Even if she defends herself the people will not believe her. She will not talk except with gestures.

Arguing and talking about the details of the calamity especially with the foolish will destroy a person more.

Her pregnancy was something extra ordinary, so her innocence was proven by something extra ordinary because no one would believe her as much as she defended herself. She pointed to the baby and he said in

Verse 30:

He said, ‘Indeed I am a servant of Allah! He has given me the Book and made me a prophet.

We move back to Verse 26 to explain a point:

When Maryam (‘Alayhassallam) said:

اني نذرت للرحمان

“Indeed I have vowed a fast to the All-beneficent

This is the same as (I seek the protection of the All-beneficent from you, should you be Godwary!). She vowed and this was an act of worship. She is carrying the baby and is going to the people. She is going to confront a very distressful situation. She presented an act of worship to Ar-Rahmaan (Vowing – which was at their time a great worship). If Allah is merciful to the disbelievers generally then He will be more merciful to his believing slave and even more merciful when that slave is doing an act of worship which He loves. When Allah loves a person, He will give His special mercy. He gave her courage and this is out of His Mercy. When Allah loves a slave He gives him guidance, courage and  lets him speak the right words at the right time.

Many people want to talk to their  who are not religious about the religion but they are afraid. If they worship Allah with any action he loves Allah will show them mercy, guide them, give them courage and put the right words in their mouth.

From the verses uptill now, we learnt  7 points that at the time of difficulty we should:

1) Temporarily stay away from people
2) Remember that Allah decreed this for you, so accept it.
3) Don’t be sad.
4) Look at the blessings that Allah gave you.
5) Take the means. Don’t let your weakness overpower you.
6) Eat, drink and rejoice with the blessings.
7) Keep silent.

Next Week we continue with: What was the ‘Uboodiyah of Eesa such that Allah showed him mercy?!
