The reformation of hearts: Sunday 29th Jumada Al-Awwal 1435 ( 30th March 2014)

The mindful person is concerned about his weight with Allâh on the Day of Judgement. So he will bring an intention for every step he takes, hoping that Allâh will reward him.

Sheikh As Sa’adi (Rahimahullaah) said, “The more obstacles there are in preventing a person to do good, the more the reward”

Therefore we have to be aware and attentive of every step we take when we leave our house in order that Allâh will reward us for every good deed we do and add it to our scale.

We are not dealing with humans, we are dealing with The Lord who is, الشكور, The Most Appreciative.

Abu Hurayrah (Radia-Allaahu ‘Anhu) narrated that the Prophet said, “A man saw a thorny branch and removed it from the way. Allâh became pleased by his action and forgave him for that.” (Al Bukhari 1.11.624)

In another version, “…and he was admitted to Paradise” (Muslim)

This is an easy deed to do. The person who is aware will not belittle even the tiniest deed. He will want to add as much as possible to his scale.

Your weight with Allâh is not according to your nobility or wealth, it is about how much faith and piety you have in your heart.

In order to increase our love of Allâh we need detailed knowledge that will bring life to our hearts. An indication of a dead heart is when a person commits a sin and he feels no guilt. We need a heart that is sensitive to sins. We need knowledge that will bring shyness towards Allâh such that when we commit a sin we will feel ashamed. We need abundant knowledge about Allâh.

Our heart has قول + عمل. The عمل are the feelings of our heart and are dependent on the قول which are the beliefs.

Allâh makes us go through situations to test our first reaction and resort. To whom will we run to first? This is the test, in order to show us how much we believe in Allâh. If you run to Allâh as soon as you get a problem and then take the means this indicates that there is strong faith about Allâh in your heart. Check your first reaction in every situation.

We need abundant knowledge + training our heart. We can train our heart by reminding it of the meanings of the names of Allâh.

  1. Allâh is الصمد. He is the One who I resort to during times of needs. He is قيوم over everything, over all my affairs. He is my وكيل, my guardian, my protector, etc.

When you repeat this to yourself all the time you will strengthen your heart. You will not become afraid or depressed, you will face your problems with a strong heart.

 

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE HEART ON THE SCALE

The heart is the place where Allâh looks all the time.

Abu Hurayrah (Radia-Allaahu ‘Anhu) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa salaam) said ” Verily Allah does not look to your bodies nor to your faces but He looks to your hearts,” and he pointed towards the heart with his fingers.” (Sahih-Muslim)

The scholars concluded from this Hadith that the heart is the place where Allâh looks at. This statement means that if the person extends his hand with 100KD in charity, you have to know that Allâh doesn’t look at the hand or the amount you are paying, He is looking at what is established in your heart the moment you extend your hand.

EX. You may give a lecture where people are impressed. During your lecture Allâh is looking at your hear; what is established in it at that time. Are you seeking the pleasure of Allâh or are you happy with the people? Why are beautifying your statement? Or the audience, they may be sitting and looking attentively but their hearts may be absent. We cannot deceive Allâh.

Now, Allâh is looking at your heart. If you are aware of this statement you wouldn’t let Allâh see something that isn’t good in your heart.

حسد

It is said that there is nobody but they commit حسد. Everyone practices envy but differently. Some people will practice it day and night without them knowing it. It is when Allâh gives a blessing to someone and you don’t like that so you express it.

The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa salaam) said: “Beware of jealousy, for verily it destroys good deeds the way fire destroys wood.” [Abu Dawūd]

The حسد has different hidden forms.

A) Criticising/Judging people.

One may criticise someone for getting a promotion.

  1. “Why did they make her the leader? What qualifications did she have? Why did they give her an A and me a B?”

B) Calculating

Someone passes by a building and does not speak loudly. In her heart she will calculate how many apartments are in the building and how much each rent is to know the amount the owner receives. This indicates حسد. The believer should immediately repel these thoughts, because it is a blessing which Allâh has bestowed upon his servants. It is as if this person is angry with Allâh’s Qadr. Therefore حسد is a very serious sickness. If you are not a strong believer you will not know the hidden aspects of it.

C) Someone passes by a beautiful car and says, “Really these people enjoy their life, they have no problems.”

In Surah Ta-Ha Verse 131:

وَلَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِ أَزْوَاجًا مِّنْهُمْ زَهْرَةَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَرِزْقُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰ

And strain not your eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment to various groups of them (polytheists and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah), the splendour of the life of this world that We may test them thereby. But the provision (good reward in the Hereafter) of your Lord is better and more lasting.

Allâh gave them this as a test. You are supposed to be thanking Allâh for not putting you into this fitnah. You are foolish if you wish for what the rich people have, because Allâh says this is a Fitnah.

Who admits that he is envying them in this situation? No one, because they don’t know that this is considered envying.

 

D) Two friends study together. Everyone went to a certain college. Allâh gave one a high salary and good life, and the other one may get something less. The latter will say, “He was in the same class as I was…” Implying that this person was not very clever before.

 

E) It is not only the poor people that practice حسد. Even rich people practice it. It happened there was an emergency in a flight, they moved people from economy to first class. Those who were in first class were staring at them and started grumbling and murmuring because they didn’t pay. This is envy. This is rizq of Allâh for them. They don’t like that Allâh is allowing others to share the blessing.

Allâh forbade us from wanting what Allâh has bestowed upon the people.

In Surah Nisaa’ Verse 32:

وَلَا تَتَمَنَّوْا مَا فَضَّلَ اللَّهُ بِهِ بَعْضَكُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ ۚ لِّلرِّجَالِ نَصِيبٌ مِّمَّا اكْتَسَبُوا ۖ وَلِلنِّسَاءِ نَصِيبٌ مِّمَّا اكْتَسَبْنَ ۚ وَاسْأَلُوا اللَّهَ مِن فَضْلِهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمًا 

And wish not for the things in which Allah has made some of you to excel others. For men there is reward for what they have earned, (and likewise) for women there is reward for what they have earned, and ask Allah of His Bounty. Surely, Allah is Ever All-Knower of everything.

Instead of wishing, if you see a blessing then ask Allâh to give you a blessing.

Sheikh Sa’adi (Rahimahullaah) said regarding this verse, Allâh warns the faithful not to covet the things which Allâh has granted to others out of His benefaction and benevolence on them; whether such things are possible to attain or not. Therefore, women should not covet those characteristics of men by which Allâh has granted them a degree higher over them; neither should the deprived or those with some disability covet for wealth or perfect physique, because such unattainable wishes are considered to fall under the category of jealousy. If a person, after witnessing Allâh’s bounties in the possession of another, wishes that these bounties be taken away from that individual or destroyed and given to him, then this is termed as jealousy.

Additionally, making such a wish is tantamount to being angry with Allâh’s virtue of pre-ordainment and is an indication that the person is indulging in the evils of indolence and false desires, which are hazards in the way of struggle and practicality. However, the following two factors are exempt from this principle and are rather desirable:

1) A person should make every legal effort within his power to attain worldly and spiritual benefits

2) A person should beg Allâh for His blessings, and never rely on his own ability, skill or those of anyone else except Allâh.

 

For this reason Allâh says, Men shall have a reward for what they have earned”. That is, men will reap the reward of their fruitful deeds, “and women shall have a reward for what they have earned”. None will earn except that which they strive for and make effort for. Therefore ask Allâh for His bounty, referring to His blessings in all.

Allâh ended the verse with إن الله كان بكل شئءعليما because He knows who deserves to be given and who doesn’t. He knows it is good for so and so and it may corrupt the faith of someone else. Don’t wish, because you don’t know and Allâh knows.

In Surah Imran verses 37-38:

فَتَقَبَّلَهَا رَبُّهَا بِقَبُولٍ حَسَنٍ وَأَنبَتَهَا نَبَاتًا حَسَنًا وَكَفَّلَهَا زَكَرِيَّا ۖ كُلَّمَا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا زَكَرِيَّا الْمِحْرَابَ وَجَدَ عِندَهَا رِزْقًا ۖ قَالَ يَا مَرْيَمُ أَنَّىٰ لَكِ هَٰذَا ۖ قَالَتْ هُوَ مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَرْزُقُ مَن يَشَاءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ. هُنَالِكَ دَعَا زَكَرِيَّا رَبَّهُ ۖ قَالَ رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ

So her Lord (Allah) accepted her with goodly acceptance. He made her grow in a good manner and put her under the care of Zakariya (Zachariya). Every time he entered Al-Mihrab to (visit) her , he found her supplied with sustenance. He said: “O Maryam (Mary)! From where have you got this?” She said, “This is from Allah.” Verily, Allah provides sustenance to whom He wills, without limit.” At that time Zakariya (Zachariya) invoked his Lord, saying: “O my Lord! Grant me from You, a good offspring. You are indeed the All-Hearer of invocation.”

Maryam was an عابده, she used to dedicate herself to worshipping Allâh. Her rizq came to her without any effort.  When Zakariya asked her where it came from she said it’s from Allâh, ان الله يرزق من يشاء بغير حساب

On the authority of ‘Abdullah who related that he heard the Messenger of Allâh  say “Whoever makes the Hereafter his sole concern, then Allâh will be sufficient for him concerning his affairs and needs in the world…” (Ibn Mâjah, and others).

IMMEDIATELY, Zakariya made Du’aa. He didn’t wish, He asked Allâh from His bounty.

The Jews and Christians envy the believers.

In Surah Baqarah Verse 109:

وَدَّ كَثِيرٌ مِّنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ لَوْ يَرُدُّونَكُم مِّن بَعْدِ إِيمَانِكُمْ كُفَّارًا حَسَدًا مِّنْ عِندِ أَنفُسِهِم مِّن بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمُ الْحَقُّ ۖ فَاعْفُوا وَاصْفَحُوا حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَ اللَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Many of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish that if they could turn you away as disbelievers after you have believed, out of envy from their ownselves, even, after the truth (that Muhammad Peace be upon him is Allah’s Messenger) has become manifest unto them. But forgive and overlook, till Allah brings His Command. Verily, Allah is Able to do all things.

Love = ود

Allâh is referring to the Jews and Christians. They love that we apostate and not practice the religion.

حسد من عندي أنفسكم

The truth had come to them and come to the believers. The Muslims accepted the truth but they didn’t. Because they didn’t accept the truth they want you to be like them. They know in the bottom of their hearts that we are on the right way. So be proud of your religion, and don’t give up your Hijab and Niqab especially when you are in front of the disbelievers. If you remove it, you are making the disbelievers happy and Allâh angry.  حسد is practised by people young and old on small and big scales.

A woman may visiting her friend who is happy with her life saying, “You do all the housework and your husband doesn’t do anything.” She is raising this question out of envy because she sees her friend is happy.

Even if the husband doesn’t do anything in the house and you take the whole responsibility, if you do that hoping the reward from Allâh you will be rewarded. Allâh loves المحسنين. Don’t wait for the reward from your husband or anyone. Spend on people, and ask Allâh the acceptance of your good deeds and Allâh will add this to your scale.

Isn’t your concern your scale? Allâh has opened for you a gate of goodness which he hasn’t opened for someone else. We need to thank Allâh. He made your husband your gate to Paradise. Don’t be ungrateful to your husband or to the situation you are in because of the envious people. These questions come from a حاسد.

 Allâh said in Surah Muhammad Verse 29:

أَمْ حَسِبَ الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ أَن لَّن يُخْرِجَ اللَّهُ أَضْغَانَهُمْ 

Or do those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy), think that Allah will not bring to light all their hidden ill-wills?

You can’t hide what is in your heart from Allâh. He is able to bring it out and show it to you, but there are people who are seers and people are blind. Allâh looks at our heart; our intention, truthfulness, what we hope from the deed. He knows the thoughts that pass by in our heart.

Many people think that as long as they didn’t do any action or utter a word they won’t be accountable. We are accountable for the thoughts which are established in our heart. If the thought passes and you think considerably and discuss it, it means that these thoughts are established in your hearts, although you may not have talked about it or acted upon it. We have to be careful, we will be accounted for it whether it is good or evil.

When evil thoughts come and you don’t repel it by استغفار or استعاذه you will be accounted for it.

One of the sicknesses of the heart is شماتا (Feeling rejoice at the misfortune or others)

Ex1 .Someone criticised your children. You heard these words and didn’t say anything. Days passed and you were in a gathering and you heard that the children of the lady who offended you did something wrong and the people are talking about it. This is a test. You may say, “حرام don’t talk about her” but what is established in your heart? Do you think, ‘Allâh is punishing her for talking about my children?’ This is a sin.

Ex2. You may reveal the secrets of people, so Allâh will reveal your secrets. It’s a matter of hearts.

Ex3. A man wronged his wife. In return she went to her family and friends and talked about him and revealed his defects. She wronged him more than he wronged her. She is considered a transgressor in Allâh’s sight.

Yet we give ourselves excuses for doing all this. Allâh is going to take account of us. The believers concern is his weight with Allâh.

In Surah Nisaa’ Verse 142:

إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ يُخَادِعُونَ اللَّهَ وَهُوَ خَادِعُهُمْ وَإِذَا قَامُوا إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ قَامُوا كُسَالَىٰ يُرَاءُونَ النَّاسَ وَلَا يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا

Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salat (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little. 

Allâh is talking about the hypocrites. People who recite the Qur’ân don’t consider themselves hypocrites; they ascribe purity to themselves.

The hypocrites think they can deceive Allâh, but He is deceiving them. Allâh is mentioning His attribute, but this is a صفه مقيده (A restricted attribute). This means that you don’t attribute Allâh as deceiving all the time, it means that he only deceives the disbelievers and hypocrites. It is restricted to the deceivers among the people.

How can we apply this to ourselves?

Ex. A man is doing a good deed but his heart is full of sicknesses. He has pride, self-conceit, he likes showing off. At the end of the day he will be pleased with himself thinking he can deceive Allâh by his apparent good deeds but Allâh is deceiving them.

Even if you apparently look pious but inwardly there is a corrupted heart, you cannot deceive Allâh. The hypocrites thought they could deceive Allâh by praying in congregation.

Now we have to stop for a while and ask ourselves what is in our heart. What sicknesses are there in our heart? Why am I behaving like this? We don’t want to come on the Day of Judgement without weight with Allâh.

We have to gain more knowledge, especially about the names of Allâh which are related to the hearts like اللطيف، الخبير، العليم، الرقيب، المحيمن

Although المحيمن is mentioned only once in the Qur’ân, we see its impact in the whole Qur’ân. We have to study and learn these names.

When you know about these names in detail you will always remember that Allâh is watchful over your heart. When I practice the sin of the heart easily it means that I don’t understand the names of Allâh that is related to my heart.
