The Reformation of Hearts: Sunday 6th Jumada Al-Akhir 1435 (6th April 2014)

The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa salaam) mentioned one statement in two different Hadith’s:
 HADITH 1)
Prophet Muhammad (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa salaam) said, “And those persons who assemble in one of the houses of Allah (mosques), recite the book of Allah and learn and teach the Qur’an (among themselves), there will descend upon them tranquillity. Mercy will cover them, the angels will surround them and Allah will mention them in the presence of those near Him. He who is slow paced in doing good deeds, his descent does not make him go ahead.” (Muslim)
HADITH 2)
The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa salaam) said, “There is no man (person) follows a path in quest of knowledge, but Allah will make the path of paradise easy for him. He who is slow paced in doing good deeds, his descendant does not make him go ahead.” (Abu Dawud, authenticated by Al-Albani)
Many lecturers stop at the hadiths and do not say the continuation. The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alaihi wa salaam) said the same statement after mentioning the good deeds. He also emphasised that we have to put effort in seeking the good. We shouldn’t rely on our descendants as it will not benefit us with Allah.
Our good deeds will benefit us with Allah. This will take you ahead to Allah and nothing else. This is a very important matter, we need to work hard in performing good deeds. Don’t rely on who you are; your nationality, nobility, etc.
This is one of the most important concepts that one should consider when doing good deeds.
One should also hope that Allah accepts his good deeds. While we do ‘Ibaadah we need to renew our intention, because Allah is looking at our hearts. Do not let your heart be distracted during the lecture if we want to go ahead with Allah. Distraction and heedlessness may lessen the reward. Exert your utmost to collect your heart and be heedful. The Shaytan wants to distract you and lose your reward. There is no deed more virtuous than sitting in a gathering where Allah is mentioned. We need to follow the manners of sitting in the gatherings of knowledge so we will get more good deeds.
We need to hope Allah will forgive our sins while we sit. We have to be alert all the time, we are in a Jihad while we are sitting. This is not a gathering like any other gathering. We should always be aware. Our intention should be accompanying us until the end of the lecture if we want to get the reward of acquiring knowledge.
We want Paradise, and it isn’t just given to us like that. When you want to buy a diamond, you pay thousands.
If you want Jannah you need to spend your life, time and heart. You have to pay the most precious things. Sit in a manner which is loved by Allah, not to please the lecturer but to please Allah.
The heart is very important
Think:
1) My Eeman will be upright If my heart is upright.
2)’Allah is looking at my heart, He is watching my heart and deeds. At the time of the Prophet there were many who were praying and fasting but were considered hypocrites.
Allah ordered the Prophet not to pray the funeral prayers on them because they were worse than the disbelievers. The problem was their hearts. We should not be deceived by the good deeds the people do apparently.
The Prophet said in a Hadith, “after some time people will appear, your Salat will be considered nothing to their Salat, they will recite Qur’an profusely, you may belittle your recitation compared to them, but their recitation won’t pass their throat (it won’t reach their heart nor will it ascend to Allah). If I meet any one of them I will kill them.”
We have to focus on the heart. We have to check our faith in Allah.
3) Allah made success, with Him on the Day of Judgement, in having a sound heart (قلب سليم)
The person who is successful with Allah is the person who has a sound heart.
In Surah Shu’aara Verse 28-29:
يوم لا ينفع مال و لا بنون. الا من أتى الله بقلب سليم
The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail, Except him who brings to Allah a clean heart [clean from Shirk (polytheism) and Nifaq (hypocrisy).
What should the heart be clean from?
Shaykh Sa’dee said it should be lean from:
1) Shirk
2) Doubts
3) Love of evil (Some people can’t do evil but they love it. They like to remove their hijab and show their beauty but because they have a strict husband she doesn’t. It has many different forms. Some may be poor and not have the means to commit zina, but they love to do evil. We have to clear our hearts from this.)
4) Bid’ah – There is nothing called good bid’ah and bad bid’ah. Bid’ah is bid’ah. The criteria for judging it is that it is not according to the Qur’an and Sunnah, we don’t have any proof for it, the Prophet didn’t say it, the companions did not do it nor is it in the Qur’an.
بدعه حسنا =
If something is prescribed by Allah and His Messenger and people forgot it then after sometimes people come and revive it, they call it  بدعه حسنا. It’s not something new, it has basis.
Now after clearing my heart I need to fill my heart with the opposite:
1) Sincerity
2) Certainty
3) Knowledge
4) Love of Good. We need to love anything good in Islam because Allah has prescribed it.
5) My will and love should be in accordance with what Allah loves. Whatever Allah loves I love, whatever Allah hates I hate, even if they are close relatives. This doesn’t mean I don’t do good for them, this is something different and is the action of the limbs, but my heart is for Allah.
The Shaykh said, “His will is in accordance to what Allah loves and his desire (هواء) should be in accordance to what Allah legislated.”
Desire is something natural that Allah has created in us. We have desire for food, sexual relations, etc. but when it crosses the limit it becomes blameworthy.
Check your actions.
Ex. A conflict happened between someone you were helping. If you were following your desire, you would stop helping her, but if you follow what Allah loves then you would help her even if she is offending you. Your هواء (desires) should be according to what Allah loves.
The هواء controls us a lot. When we like people, we smile and greet them and if we don’t like them we don’t smile and greet them. Even the knowledgeable people do this,it is not something only ignorant people practice.
Are you following your هواء or what Allah wants from us?
When the هواء is dominating the heart the person will do according to what he likes and doesn’t like. If Allah’s love dominates the person he will do what Allah loves and wants. Check your statement, behaviour and attitude. We want to meet Allah with a sound heart, this is the person who will win with Allah on the Day of Judgement.
The heart is the place of the trials and tests.
In Surah Al-Imran Verse 154:
Then after the distress, He sent down security for you. Slumber overtook a party of you, while another party was thinking about themselves (as how to save their ownselves, ignoring the others and the Prophet SAW) and thought wrongly of Allah – the thought of ignorance. They said, “Have we any part in the affair?” Say you (O Muhammad SAW): “Indeed the affair belongs wholly to Allah.” They hide within themselves what they dare not reveal to you, saying: “If we had anything to do with the affair, none of us would have been killed here.” Say: “Even if you had remained in your homes, those for whom death was decreed would certainly have gone forth to the place of their death,” but that Allah might test what is in your breasts; and to Mahis that which was in your hearts (sins), and Allah is All-Knower of what is in (your) breasts.
This is in the context of the battle of Uhud. In the beginning of the battle the Muslims were defeated, then Allah gave them the victory.
The calamity that happened was a test.
Allah tested what was in their breasts, of eeman and hypocrisy, and to get rid( تمحيس )of what is in our hearts of sicknesses.
العليم بذات الصدور = Allah is all knowing of what is in our heart
You may say, “I am really concerned about my weight with Allah.” If you are really truthful you will take the means of increasing your faith with Allah. It is not a matter of wanting, you need to take the action and show Allah.
The believers don’t talk much, they act much. We need to work more, not just talk.
Ex. One of the virtuous deeds are transitive good deeds (متعدي) which are deeds that other people benefit from.
After learning this you hear about a project where they were building a mosque and you participated.
A narration in Musnad al-Bazzâr that al-Albânî graded as authentic, reads: “Whoever builds a mosque for Allah – though it be the size of the ground nest of a sandgrouse – Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.”
Allah is الشاكر الشكور.
You build a small masjid and Allah will build for you a house in Paradise.
When they put the name on the masjid, you ask them to put your name, centre or family name. Here is the conflict. Ask yourself, do you really want the reward from Allah? If you do then you won’t care if your name is there or not. It is more sincere to not put your name, as the Sahabah and Salaf used to hide their good deeds.
Yet, nowadays people are competing for their name to be known. This is a test for your sincerity.
A man fasted for thirty years without his own family knowing. This is how the Sahabah and Tabi’een took care of hiding their good deeds.
Sometimes we suggest a project and Allah puts the Barakah in it. The project becomes good but people talk about it without mentioning your name. Why are you concerned that they didn’t mention your name? You don’t need to tell people it was you.  Allah is the All knower, the One who is taking account. It is better that they don’t know.
We are facing these problems nowadays and making people upset and angry because their names are not mentioned. Allah is testing what is in our hearts. الاخلاص (Sincerity) is something very precious and rare. We need to fight for it.
When someone comes and praises you for a good deed you have done, don’t rejoice for their praise.  If you rejoice at the peoples praise it is not a good indication, it means you are waiting for their praise. It means that if they don’t praise you you will be unhappy.Your concern should be Allah praising you. You need to immediately make jihad, remind yourself that your full reward is with Allah.
The heart is a very important matter.
Remind yourself: The praise of Allah is truth (حق) and the praise of the people is falsehood (باطل) and vanishes. Don’t be deceived with their praise.
One of the Salaf used to say, “Whoever knows the people, will be at rest, he will not rejoice at their praise nor will he be displeased with their dispraise. They quickly become pleased or angry; the هواء is moving them”.
Take care of your weight with Allah. If your weight with the people becomes great then this is a fitnah for you. You will be like the slave whom Allah said in the Qur’an  has many masters, she’ll want to please everyone. She will be distracted and her weight with Allah will become less. The more your value with the people increases the more it is a fitnah for you. You should care only about Allah.
Nowadays we only care about the people, whether they are happy or not. Where is Allah?
We are torturing ourselves. If we know the reality of the people, we will be at rest.
There are certain actions which if we do, our weight with Allah will increase. They are heavy on the scale with Allah.
Some of them are:
1)  سبحان الله و بحمده سبحان الله العظيم
“كلمتان خفيفتان على لسان،
2) لا اله الا الله
3) Good Manners.
