The Whispers of the Shaytaan (Continued) : Sunday 9th Muharram 1436 (2nd November 2014)
Another attribute of the student of knowledge is that he leaves his house with a truthful exit.
1) When she leaves her house, the believing facts related to the deeds she is doing is clear in front of her eyes.
If attending a study circle. Her goals and hopes for attending are clear in her heart. She wants her sins to be forgiven, and wants the angels to mention her name to Allah, etc.
If you have a pure intention the facts will be alive in front of your eyes. If you get up without these matters in front of your eyes you will not receive the full reward.
2) Repel any intention other than your main goal.
In the beginning your intention may be clear and sincerely for the sake of Allah. As time goes by you will begin to make connections with the people and your intention may be tainted. You may go to the study circle to meet people, etc.
3) You should be a serious person. When you come and sit in the assembly you shouldn’t be playing or get distracted.
The way you sit indicates your seriousness. When the companions sat in the assembly of the Prophet (SallAllaahu ‘alaiyhe wa sallam), they sat so attentively it was as if birds were perched on their heads.
Repel every other intention that taints your main intention and goal in order to get the full reward from Allah.
Because many people don’t know that the sickness they are afflicted with is from the Shaytaan and called وسواس they diagnose it wrongly and take the wrong medicine. In turn, this sickness will continue to grow with them.
There are two kinds of وسواس:
- In the religion
- In worldly things
It affects children as well.
What are the causes of وسواس ?
1) Ignorance of the Religion
This is of two types:
- Ignorance in the detailed knowledge:
For instance a person knows the religion is easy. But, whenever he performsWudhu while fasting, he fears that some amount of water remaining in his mouth will nullify his fast so he dries his tongue obsessively.
The general rule is that certainty isn’t nullified by doubt. If you are certain that you performed ablution yet you keep renewing it just in case you accidentally nullified your Wudhu, the certainty is that you performed ablution, so the doubts don’t nullify that.
Ask questions in order to overcome the doubts in your heart.
- Ignorance in the foundation of the religion:
This includes doubting that Allah created us; this is from the Shaytaan. The whispers will come gradually, in steps.
As soon as you detect this, seek refuge in Allah so that the Shaytaan will يخنس.
2) Being brought up in a family that is affected by وسواس.
Some mothers are paranoid and constantly scare their children or brought up in a community where people always attribute things to magic, evil eye, etc.
Some families are so strict to the point they don’t give their children freedom to choose things like their food, clothes, etc. Be moderate and follow the Qur’an and Sunnah.
Ibn AlQayyim mentioned in his book ‘Igathat al-Lahf’:
“The Shaytaan throws the idea or evil whisper and the person will accept it due to his ignorance or due to his way of upbringing, then he will act upon it, then it will increase and become a sickness”
3) A person may go through a situation which affects his nervous system such that it is easy for him to accept the ideas thrown to him by the Shaytaan.
This is by the Qadr of Allah and is a test for this person. The remedy is the same.
For example: Insecurity; A person may have gone through a difficult childhood and is constantly afraid. This grows with the child.
4) Committing Sins.
If righteous people commit a sin, the feeling of guilt in their heart will cause the Shaytaan to overpower them and make them despair of the mercy of Allah and forget that Allah the most merciful, is happier when the slave repents.
5) A genetic problem
The sickness runs in the family.
6) Being continuously reminded of something.
The media might exaggerate and cause fear amongst people.
If we take Breast Cancer for example, people rebuke you for not going to check ups regularly. People fear sicknesses.
The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “No precaution can protect against the decree of Allaah. Du’aa’ is beneficial with regard to what has been decreed and what has not been decreed. The du’aa’ meets the calamity that has been decreed and wrestles with it, until the Day of Resurrection.”
(Narrated by al-Tabaraani, 2/800 (33). Al-Albaani said in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 7739, (it is) hasan).
By all means go for check ups, but don’t believe it will delay or save you from death.
If you come across a person sick with وسواس :
- Don’t rebuke or reproach them
- Be gentle and kind with them
- Repeat the advice and information again and again
It is reported by al-Bukhari that a man who drank wine was brought to the Prophet (Peace be upon him). The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, ‘Beat him!’ Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘So some beat him with their hands, and some with their shoes, and some with their garments (by twisting it) like a lash, and then when we finished, someone said to him, “May Allah disgrace you!” On that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, “Do not say so, for you are helping the Shaytaan to overpower him.”
Ibn Hajar (May Allah have mercy on him) said, “The goal of Shaytaan in making the sin beautiful is to humiliate and disgrace the person. When you say that, you are helping the Shaytaan attain his goal.”
Some scholars said, “الوسواس is a بدعة originated from ignorance or due to lack of understanding.”
Because the person is ignorant the Shaytaan whispers and makes him do new or invented actions.
A man came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and said, “O Allah’s messenger, matters are presented to one of us which grieves us and we prefer to become burnt coal rather than speaking of it.” Allah’s messenger (Peace be upon him) said, “Allahu Akbar (thrice), Alhamdulillah who has turned his (Shaytaans) plot into waswasah (just a whisper).”
(Sahih Abu Dawud and Authenticated by Al-Albani 5112)
The difference between this whisper and the whispers in the previousahadeeth is that the former is where the person listens to theShaytaan’s whispers and acts upon it, which happens to people with weak faith.
The second type is regards to those who are perfect in faith and when it came to them they rejected and hated themselves to the extent they wished they were burnt than to speak it. They repelled it and sought refuge with Allah.
‘Uthman bin Abi al ‘Aas (May Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, the Shaytaan is spoiling my prayers and confusing my reciting of the Qur’an.” The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said, “That is a Satan called Khinzab, so if you feel of him say, “I seek refuge with Allah from you,” then blow your breath with light spit on your left three times. ‘Uthman said, “I did that and Allah took him away from me.”
In Surat Al- Mujadila Verse 10:
إِنَّمَا النَّجْوَىٰ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ لِيَحْزُنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَيْسَ بِضَارِّهِمْ شَيْئًا إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۚ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ
The Shaytaan wants to spoil our lives, relationships with the people, cause us sadness and grief, etc.
He would incite the hypocrites and disbelievers to talk secretly amongst themselves when the believers passed by to make them feel upset.
In Surat Maryam Verse 19:
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا الشَّيَاطِينَ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ تَؤُزُّهُمْ أَزًّا
1) Inciting them to do evil
2) Tempting them
3) Disturbing them with the loud voice of the Shaytaan
They may want to listen to the truth but the loud voice of the Shaytaan disturbs them and distracts them from listening to the truth.
A lady wanted to know about Islam and came to the centre with her baby. She sat with the preachers and noticed that the child was screaming to an extent it was disturbing the mother especially when the preacher was saying لا إله إلا الله. The baby was taken, theAthan was pronounced andAyatulKursi read in his ear. The baby immediately calmed down and stayed quiet until the end of the session. Later, the mother embraced Islam.
You need to fight back by asking for help from Allah.
What is the description of the person overpowered by the Shaytaan?
Ibn Qayyim (May Allah have mercy on him) said, “From the plot of the Shaytaan is that he smells the person to know what kind of person he is. Is he enthusiastic or lazy? If he sees that you are a lazy person he will dishearten you more. If he sees you are active and having high resolution he will make you belittle the deed and transgress the limit.”
If he couldn’t overpower you regarding your actions, he will whisper in your heart that people are belittling you, etc. If the person accepts this statement he will stay at home and abandon Da’wah.
