The Names of Allaah: Al Hayy, Al Qayoom – Sunday 4th January 2015

Allah has created us to know Him as a result of which we will love, magnify and worship Him, thus fulfilling the purpose behind our creation.

We will come to know Allah from the Qur’an and the Sunnah. Allah tells us about Himself numerous times in the Qur’an.

For instance, in the beginning of Surah Aal-Imran Verse 1:

 

 اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ

Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence.

 

 لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا الله  is the statement of Tawheed. It represents the Tawheed of the person, it is based on how much the person loves and magnifies Allah.

Love and magnification are feelings. Allah created everyone with feelings but they don’t use it to come closer to Allah. They direct their feelings to worldly things. 

The true believer has strong feelings towards the غيب (The Unseen). He has strong feelings towards every article of faith.

The feelings are in the heart. The more sound the heart is, the more  the feelings increase. The sicker the heart becomes, the lesser the feelings toward Allah, the angels, the Day of Judgement, etc. 

The sound heart will react correctly as it goes through situations in life whereas the sick heart’s reaction will be incorrect.

Every organ in our body has a function. If they are sound they will perform their function properly, just like if the heart is sound the person will worship Allah correctly.

If the believer reads in Surat Al-‘Isra’ Verse 78:

 

أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَىٰ غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ وَقُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ ۖ إِنَّ قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا

Establish prayer at the decline of the sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night and [also] the Qur’an of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.

He will prolong his recitation during his prayer because he knows that it is witnessed. He will enjoy his prayer.

We believe, but we have no feelings because there is a thick barrier between us and the unseen. 

We hear about death, Hellfire and paradise yet we have no feelings. This is due to lack of belief which is due to lack of knowledge about Allah. Our hearts are hardened because we excessively indulge in the worldly matters. 

The more knowledge of Allah you have, the more feelings you will have.

All of our tests in this life revolve around Tawheed. Allah is testing our Tawheed through these trials. How much will you return to Allah, invoke him, cry to Him? How much will you wait for the removal of distress from Allah and no one else? 

If you live in this world with strong Tawheed, it will benefit you in your grave when the angels ask you, ‘Who is your Lord?’

We prolong our problems for ourselves. Instead of going to الصمد, The Self Sufficient, immediately. When we have trials, we run to people and talk to them about our problems. We think about solutions 24/7 and don’t realize that the solution is with Allah.

The most important names we should understand is الحي القيوم.

Al-Hayy is the ever living who never dies. His life is perfect. His perfect life entails perfect attributes. 

Al- Qayoom has two meanings:

1) القائم بنفسه Al Qa’im Binafsih

Self sufficient, Independent, Rich.

Surat Fatir Verse 15:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَنتُمُ الْفُقَرَاءُ إِلَى اللَّهِ ۖ وَاللَّهُ هُوَ الْغَنِيُّ الْحَمِيد

O mankind, you are those in need of Allah , while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.

Many people read this verse but don’t know how to apply it in their lives. Sit down and write a list of your needs. You will realise that throughout your life you are in need. Our problem is that when Allah grants us a blessing we feel self sufficient and not in need of Allah.

Surat Al- ‘Alaq Verse 4:

الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ

Who taught by the pen –

Allah taught us how to write, how to hold the pen. How many times have we thanked Allah for this blessing.

The true poor person is the one who realizes he is in need of Allah. When he hears the Athan he will rejoice because now the rich king is calling him and offering to answer him. He will run to stand in front of Allah to ask His need, and he asks Allah, ‘Guide us to the straight path’ – because he needs guidance in this Dunya.

Surat Al- ‘Alaq Verses 6 and 7:

كَلَّا إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَيَطْغَىٰ

No! [But] indeed, man transgresses

أَن رَّآهُ اسْتَغْنَىٰ

Because he sees himself self-sufficient.

The person who doesn’t know this will feel the prayer is a burden over him. He doesn’t realize it is his chance to ask Allah his  needs. He feels self-sufficient.

2)  Al Muqeem Li ghayrih المقيم لغيره

He stands in charge of providing, taking care and guiding each soul.

The قيوميه Qayoomiyah of Allah in the Qur’an:

Surat Ar- Ra’d Verse 33:

أَفَمَنْ هُوَ قَائِمٌ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ ۗ وَجَعَلُوا لِلَّهِ شُرَكَاءَ قُلْ سَمُّوهُمْ ۚ أَمْ تُنَبِّئُونَهُ بِمَا لَا يَعْلَمُ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَم بِظَاهِرٍ مِّنَ الْقَوْلِ ۗ بَلْ زُيِّنَ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مَكْرُهُمْ وَصُدُّوا عَنِ السَّبِيلِ ۗ وَمَن يُضْلِلِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ هَادٍ

Then is He who is a maintainer of every soul, [knowing] what it has earned, [like any other]? But to Allah they have attributed partners. Say, “Name them. Or do you inform Him of that which He knows not upon the earth or of what is apparent of speech?” Rather, their [own] plan has been made attractive to those who disbelieve, and they have been averted from the way. And whomever Allah leaves astray – there will be for him no guide.

Surat Fatir Verse 41:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُمْسِكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ أَن تَزُولَا ۚ وَلَئِن زَالَتَا إِنْ أَمْسَكَهُمَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِّن بَعْدِهِ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ حَلِيمًا غَفُورًا

Indeed, Allah holds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease. And if they should cease, no one could hold  them [in place] after Him. Indeed, He is Forbearing and Forgiving.

Surat Ar Rum  Verse 25:

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَن تَقُومَ السَّمَاءُ وَالْأَرْضُ بِأَمْرِهِ ۚ ثُمَّ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ دَعْوَةً مِّنَ الْأَرْضِ إِذَا أَنتُمْ تَخْرُجُونَ

And of His signs is that the heaven and earth remain by His command. Then when He calls you with a [single] call from the earth, immediately you will come forth.

تقوم Taqoom here means to stay still and firm.

Allah created all the creation and He is قائم Qa’im over it all. He holds the heavens from falling on the earth. He disposes the affairs of all creation. All the creatures are in need of Allah Al Qayoom.

The name Al Qayoom implies all the practical attributes of Allah (صفات فعليه). All the actions of Allah fall under this name and indicate Allah’s Qayoomiyah.

The Qayoomiyah of Allah in detail:- 

1)  Qayoomiyat il Khalq 

Allah created everything. The action of creating is from the Qayoomiyah of Allah.

Surat Al- Mu’minun Verses 12-14:

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ مِن سُلَالَةٍ مِّن طِينٍ

And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay.

ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَاهُ نُطْفَةً فِي قَرَارٍ مَّكِينٍ

Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging.

ثُمَّ خَلَقْنَا النُّطْفَةَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقْنَا الْعَلَقَةَ مُضْغَةً فَخَلَقْنَا الْمُضْغَةَ عِظَامًا فَكَسَوْنَا الْعِظَامَ لَحْمًا ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَاهُ خَلْقًا آخَرَ ۚ فَتَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ

Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah , the best of creators.

It is Allah who makes the human go through these stages. He is قائم over it. 

Nowadays when people talk about this, they talk without attributing the actions to Allah. This is not good manners with Allah.

Surat Al-‘An’am Verse 99:

 

وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجْنَا بِهِ نَبَاتَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ فَأَخْرَجْنَا مِنْهُ خَضِرًا نُّخْرِجُ مِنْهُ حَبًّا مُّتَرَاكِبًا وَمِنَ النَّخْلِ مِن طَلْعِهَا قِنْوَانٌ دَانِيَةٌ وَجَنَّاتٍ مِّنْ أَعْنَابٍ وَالزَّيْتُونَ وَالرُّمَّانَ مُشْتَبِهًا وَغَيْرَ مُتَشَابِهٍ ۗ انظُرُوا إِلَىٰ ثَمَرِهِ إِذَا أَثْمَرَ وَيَنْعِهِ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكُمْ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ

And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things. We produce from it greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers. And from the palm trees – of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And [We produce] gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at [each of] its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

Allah is قائم over every plant and tree. 

Go to the Qur’an. Look at every creation of Allah and see how Allah brought it into existence. This is the Qayoomiyat il Khalq. The impact of this name is fills our lives.

2) Qayoomiyat il Imdaad

Allah created all the creation and did not leave them without provision. Rather, he provided them with everything they need in this life and the means of their livelihood on this earth. 

Surat Al-Ĥijr Verses 19-20:

وَالْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَاهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ وَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مَّوْزُونٍ

And the earth – We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.

وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَايِشَ وَمَن لَّسْتُمْ لَهُ بِرَازِقِينَ

And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.

He made us means of provision, like the hot season. If it weren’t for that we wouldn’t have freezers to sell cold drinks, etc. If there were no sicknesses, there would be no hospitals, no doctors, etc.

There is nothing Allah created on earth except that it is a means of provision for us.
