The Names of Allah: Al-Hayy, Al-Qayoom – 11th January 2015
The Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said,” Whoever fasts during Ramadhan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven.”
In order to establish the days of Ramadhan with fasting and its nights with prayer, faith is needed, which we ought to start working on increasing from now. The righteous predecessors used to invoke Allah from Rabi Al-Awwal to make them reach the month of Ramadan, with strong faith.
One of the means of increasing faith is knowing Allah by His names and attributes. This is obligatory upon the believer. When you know Allah by His names and attributes, your Tawheed will be correct and you will behave in a way that is pleasing to Allah.
When you fulfill the conditions of لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللّه in your life, Allah will enable you to pronounce the statement at the time of your death.
Mu’adh ibn Jabal reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said, “He whose last words are لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّه will enter Paradise.”
Sunan Abu Dawud 3116
When you know Allah you will love, magnify and deify Him. Your heart will be attached to Him and no one else, and this is nothing but Tawheed.
Only few people know the meaning of the names present in Ayat Al-Kursi even though they read it daily. If you want it to have an effect you must know and understand the meaning of the Ayah, especially the names of Allah mentioned in it.
The name Al Qayoom implies the attribute of Qayoomiyah.
Al Qayoom is the intensive form of the word Qaa’im (Standing in charge of disposing the affairs of the creation)
Al Qayoom has two meanings:
1) القائم بنفسه/بذاته
Allah is rich in Himself and is in no need of the creation, unlike the creation whose richness is acquired. If Allah gives him he becomes rich, if He take from him, he becomes poor.
Allah is not rich because He owns the whole dominion. He doesn’t need the creation, It is the creation that is in need of Him.
Those who associate partners in worship with Allah and ask the intercession of the dead don’t understand that Allah doesn’t need anyone to convey the needs of the creation to Him . They don’t know who Al Qayoom is.
2) Allah is Qaa’im over every creation.
If you know the name Al Qayoom your heart will be at rest, you will know that He is the One who disposes the affairs of the whole creation.
The believer does not worry or over think matters because He knows that Allah is taking care of all His affairs, even the tiniest of things.
The name Al Qayoom includes all the practical attributes. All the actions of Allah are included in the Qayoomiyah of Allah.
The Qayoomiyah of Allah in detail:-
Allah created everything
Allah provides for everything
Surat Al-Hadid Verse 25:
We have already sent Our messengers with clear evidences and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice. And We sent down iron, wherein is great military might and benefits for the people, and so that Allah may make evident those who support Him and His messengers unseen. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.
Allah sent down iron which is used for making military weapons and many other beneficial tools.
Surat Ash-Shura Verse 32-33:
Whenever Allah says “And of His signs ” you have to consider this sign, there’s a miracle within it.
Ships are a very important means of transport, they are used to transport men and goods from one region to another.
Allah is the One who created the sea and wind and He is Qaa’im over them.
It is He who created the buoyant force, this phenomena allows the ship to float on the sea.
The wind is one of the soldiers of Allah. Allah commands the wind to blow gently or violently and it does not move without the command of Allah.
The ships are sailing because Allah commanded the wind to push it. Even a ship with an engine requires wind. The ship requires both the wind and sea to sail. All this is for our benefit.
Surat Al-Hijr Verse 22:
Allah sent some specific winds which make the clouds bear heavy water, then sent down the water and gave it to us to drink. He is the one who stores the water in the form of wells, springs etc.
Surat An-Nahl Verses 1 and 2:
يُنَزِّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةَ بِالرُّوحِ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ أَنْ أَنذِرُوا أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاتَّقُونِ
He sends down the angels, with the inspiration of His command, upon whom He wills of His servants, [telling them], “Warn that there is no deity except Me; so fear Me.”
In the first two verses alone Allah tells us about the 6 articles of faith:
i. Belief in Allah– Allah mentioned that He is high above what the people associate with Him.
ii. Belief in the Angels– Allah mentioned that He sends down the angels.
iii. Belief in the books– Allah sends down the angels with inspiration of His command, which is the revelation.
iv. Belief in Messengers– His revelations are sent down to whomever He wills of His servants.
v. Belief in the Last day– The command of Allah that is coming. This is mentioned in verse one and is nothing but the Day of Judgement.
vi. Belief in the Qadr (Decree)
The Qadr is of four ranks:
1. Knowledge 2.Writing 3.Will 4.Creation
Following these two verses, verses 3-8 state:
All the animals are provisions from Allah; He created them. All the cars, planes etc are included in “And He creates that which you do not know“. It is He who gave man the mind to make cars; we should attribute these ideas to Allah.
Allah sends down rain for us to drink, and to bring forth pasture for the cattle to eat. He created and subjected the day, night, sun and moon for our service.
These are examples ofقيومية الامداد.
If you are in need of assistance, ask Allah to subject someone to help you, It is in His hand to subject the creation to your service.
Out of Allah’s love, He provides all these means of living for us. Knowing this should increase our love for Him.
Allah is the One who created us, provides for us, and guards and protects us. He maintains us, takes care of us by His Qayoomiya.
Surat Al-Haj Verse 65:
Do you not see that Allah has subjected to you whatever is on the earth and the ships which run through the sea by His command? And He restrains the sky from falling upon the earth, unless by His permission. Indeed Allah , to the people, is Kind and Merciful.
In this verse we have قيوميه الإمداد and الحفظ.
Everything on the Earth is subjected for us, even the insects that we consider harmful are for our benefit.
It is from Allah’s compassion and mercy that He protects us by holding the heavens from falling on the earth, without any pillars. If it is held by pillars Allah will not say “يمسك” meaning ”He holds“.
Surat Al-‘Anbiya’ Verse 42:
Allah is drawing our attention to one of his greatest favours on us, His guardianship during the day and night.
When we go to sleep we lose all our senses except our hearing, and this is considered minor death.
When we go to sleep we recite Ayat ul Kursi.
It is as if you are saying, Oh Allah I’m going to sleep and lose my senses and only you can protect me, you Who neither sleep nor slumber overtakes. You are Qayoom over every organ in my body.
Allah is the one protecting us from every internal and external danger.
Surat Ar-Rum Verse 25:
The heavens and the earth stand by Allah’s command. They will be protected by Allah, they will not move from their places except by the command of Allah.
If you know that Allah is Qaa’im over us, you will know that you cannot live without Allah, therefore let your heart be attached to Allah alone.
Nothing can continue to exist without Allah Al Qayoom.
Allah is the one who guides us.
Surat Ash-Shu’ara’ Verses 78-81:
In these verses we can see how the prophets introduced Allah to their opponents by emphasising His actions.
There are two kinds of guidance:
1) General: Which is that Allah guides all the creation to what benefits them and the means of their living.
2) Special: Which is that Allah guides to and brings happiness in this life and the next. This is of two kinds:
i) هداية الإرشاد : This is showing the guidance, to make people recognize the truth.
ii) هداية توفيق: There are many who hear the message, but not everyone acts upon it. This is to act upon the guidance.
This is only in Allah’s hand.
Allah sent the Prophets to show the people the message, but only few responded to their call and it was they whom Allah guided. It is not in the hands of the messengers or the preachers to guide the people, they can only show them the way.
There are 4 ways of guiding people:
1) By sending messengers
2) Revealing books
Surat Ash-Shura Verse 52:
And thus We have revealed to you an inspiration of Our command. You did not know what is the Book or [what is] faith, but We have made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants. And indeed, [O Muhammad], you guide to a straight path –
Allah called the Qur’an, “روح” (Spirit). The Qur’an gives life to the heart, the heart in which there is no Qur’an, is dead.
3) Through Universal Signs
Everything we see around us are all Signs from Allah for us to ponder and contemplate.
4) By nurturing His creation through decrees
Allah guides us through decreeing events in our life to show us the truth. This is a very important means of guidance.
Allah created us in أحسن تقويم (The Best Form).
The heart’s duty is to know, love, magnify and deify Allah. It is its job to worship and to be attached to Him alone.
When Allah created us, He gave us a heart and He put feelings in it in order that we may use it to walk on the straight path in this life. We will all meet Allah one day, we are all journeying to Him.
Due to our association with people, our hearts get attached to them. We distribute our feelings to the creation and nothing remains for Allah. So Allah makes us go through trials and decreed events, to make our hearts attached to Him alone.
Allah will reveal and disclose the defects of the thing or person your heart is attached to so you realize that they aren’t perfect and don’t deserve your heart to be attached to them. Allah will make the people we are attached to as lashes, torturing us.
If you learn from your experience you will give everyone their due right, without being excessive. Whereas if you don’t, Allah will repeat the event again and again. This is Allah nurturing you in order to correct your Tawheed and make your heart attached to Him alone, the Most Perfect One.
