The Names of Allah: Al-Hayy, Al-Qayoom –18th January 2015
The Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi immediately after each prescribed Prayer, there will be nothing standing between him and his entering Paradise except death.”
[An-Nasa’i, Ibn Hibban]
The Prophet (sallaAllahu alayhi wa sallam) said that whomsoever recites the first verses of Surat al-Mu’minun and then Ayat al-Kursi in the morning, will remain under the protection of Allah Most High until the evening. Similarly, whomsoever reads this during the night, will remain under the protection of Allah Most High until the morning.
Only those who recite Ayat al kursi with an attentive heart, understanding every word and the names of Allah mentioned in it will receive the rewards.
Two of the greatest names mentioned in this verse are Al-Hayy and Al-Qayoom.
Allah’s name Al-Hayy implies Allah’s perfect and eternal life which entails perfect attributes.
Al-Qayoom implies everything that exists in this life is by Allah and everything is in need of Him for their existence and the continuity of their existence.
After knowing this your heart will turn to Allah alone and you will strengthen your relation with Him in whose hand is your life.
Understanding the name Al Qayoom will perfect your Tawheed.
Allah, Al Qayoom is the One managing our lives.
Surat Yunus Verse 3:
Indeed, your Lord is Allah , who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne, arranging the matter [of His creation]. There is no intercessor except after His permission. That is Allah , your Lord, so worship Him. Then will you not remember?
Allah manages our life in the way which suits us in this world and in the next. Nothing happens without His knowledge, wisdom and will.
Whatever we need for our existence in this world is provided to us by Allah. He will not give us more than what we need. If Allah takes something from you, or you are facing a problem, know that He is managing your life.
If you pass by a garden and you see many leaves on the ground remember the perfect knowledge of Allah.
Surat Al-‘An’am Verse 59:
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.
Allah knows about the leaves that have fallen in detail and he definitely knows about the bombs and missiles which fall.
These are all happening by the will of Allah as a test and a trial. Allah is the one who arranges the affairs.
Don’t allow the Shaytan to frighten you. Be at ease in your heart because you are under Allah, Al-Qayoom’s protection. This is an honour and blessing from Allah.
When your faith in this name increases, you will reach a state where you will know that whatever has happened to you could never have missed you and whatever has missed you could never have happened to you.
One of the important aspects of the Qayoomiyah of Allah is Qayoomiyah of Guidance.
هداية الإرشاد is one type of guidance. Allah shows us the truth, guides us to it and makes us recognize it, but not everyone who recognizes and sees the truth will follow it.
We have to learn from the nurturing of Allah. We wonder why we go through the same trial repeatedly. If you don’t know what your problem is, practice عبادة الاستهداء , seeking guidance from Allah. Ask him to show you the reason why you are going through this problem.
Allah’s Qayoomiya of Guidance is mentioned in the Qur’an-
Surah Luqman Verse 20:
Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent? But of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book [from Him].
It is as if we are submerged, dipped in the blessings of Allah
This verse implies قيومية الامداد Qayoomiyah of provision.
The apparent blessings are things like our appearance, our children, water, good health, etc. The hidden blessings are things like faith, knowledge, guidance, the blessing of the hereafter, etc.
In spite of these blessings the people dispute and raise doubts regarding Allah, the prophets, Islam, and argue without knowledge.
The end of the verse referring to قيوميه الهدايه, Qayoomiyah of Guidance.
Whenever you see “أَلَمْ تَرَوْا ” in a verse, it means you need to think considerably. Whatever Allah has subjected for you should make you remember Allah, thank Him, etc. and not be blind to these blessings and dispute regarding Him.
They are blind because they have no knowledge, guidance, or a book.
There are people who are attached to the means. If they are sick and you tell them to invoke Allah Ash-Shafee (The Healer), they don’t take it seriously or are not satisfied with making Du’aa. They want something materialistic, a ‘quick’ result. They don’t realize that the doctors, the medicines, and everything else are in Allah’s Hand. He is the one who subjected these means.
Surat Az-Zumar Vere 45:
And when Allah is mentioned alone, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink with aversion, but when those [worshipped] other than Him are mentioned, immediately they rejoice. ]
Surat Luqman Verse 21:
And when it is said to them, “Follow what Allah has revealed,” they say, “Rather, we will follow that upon which we found our fathers.” Even if Satan was inviting them to the punishment of the Blaze?
They are just imitating and following blindly.
Take vowing as an example:
When someone’s child is writing an exam, the mother might say, ‘O Allah if you make my child succeed I will do such and such’. The ruling of this is that it is disliked.
The Prophet said, “Allah says the vow does not bring about for the son of Adam anything I have not decreed for him, but his vow may coincide with what has been decided for him, and by this way I cause a miser to spend of his wealth. So he gives Me (spends in charity) for the fulfillment of what has been decreed for him what he would not give Me before but for his vow.”
The success of your child is decreed already, it isn’t the vow which causes his success, but when you tell people not to vow they say, “Everyone is doing it.” This is blind imitation, and the Shaytan makes their evil deed fair seeming to them.
The way of salvation is mentioned in also mentioned in Verse 22:
And whoever submits his face to Allah while he is a doer of good – then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold. And to Allah will be the outcome of [all] matters.
The most trustworthy handhold is Laa ilaha illa Allah, so we have to follow the religion of Allah and be sincere.
In the following two verses, Verses 23-24, Allah mentions how He will deal with those who dispute regarding Him and His religion.
In Verse 29, Allah repeats Qayoomiyah of Guidance:
Do you not see that Allah causes the night to enter the day and causes the day to enter the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term, and that Allah , with whatever you do, is Acquainted?
Allah didn’t create anything in this universe except with truth, comprising of truth. He says in Verse 30:
When you contemplate the universal signs, you will realize that Allah is the truth and everything other than him is falsehood and that He is the Most High the Most Great.
In Verse 31–32:
And when waves come over them like canopies, they supplicate Allah , sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, there are [some] of them who are moderate [in faith]. And none rejects Our signs except everyone treacherous and ungrateful.
Allah nurtures these people who dispute by making them go through hardships; When a trial comes to them they invoke Allah day and night and when He saves them they divide into two groups:
This person forgets and doesn’t remember Allah much, commits sins repeatedly but still worships and thanks Allah, but not a lot.
b) ختار كفور
He promises Allah that He will be good if He lifts the trial, and when Allah takes the trial away, He is treacherous and doesn’t keep his promise, along with denying that Allah ever helped Him. He attributes the blessing to other than Allah.
Allah is describing our state. How we go through situations, how we deal with Him, and our attitude towards Him.
There are signs all around us which should increase us in faith. We need to open our eyes and look around us.
Water is a blessing from Allah. How do we deal with this blessing? Are we مقتصد or Are we ختار كفور?
When you are deprived of it you should ask yourself why. This is Allah nurturing you.
When we are deprived of any blessing, we are being nurtured by Allah. This happened by Allah’s command. Thank Allah and it will come back to you. If you are deprived of a blessing then perhaps you haven’t shown gratitude for it.
Before Allah makes a person go through a crisis in their life, Allah will make them learn about that situation.
For instance Allah will teach a person about the reward of patience. After this, Allah makes the person go through the calamity.
There have been plenty of times where you go to a class and later you go through a situation related to what you learnt. This is so that you behave in the way Allah is pleased with and you receive abundant reward. This is the nurturing of Allah.
Allah will remove obstacles that is between you and your increasing in guidance.
Allah may remove people from your life temporarily or permanently because they were an obstacle between you and Him.
But those who are ignorant may fall into depression and feel hopeless and not increase in faith. They don’t understand the nurturing of Allah.
When Allah removes someone from your way don’t regret or feel sad. Increase in good until you meet Allah. Don’t be paralyzed and behave like it’s the end of the world. Have hope and trust in Allah, think good of Him, and continue on your way. Be optimistic and feel good.
It may not just be a person, it could be wealth, or anything. Be happy, Allah wants the good for you.
Qayoomiyah of Giving Life and Death.
In Surat Ar-Rum Verse 19 Allah says:
Surat Al-Baqarah Verse 258:
Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord [merely] because Allah had given him kingship? When Abraham said, “My Lord is the one who gives life and causes death,” he said, “I give life and cause death.” Abraham said, “Indeed, Allah brings up the sun from the east, so bring it up from the west.” So the disbeliever was overwhelmed [by astonishment], and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Any verse in the Qur’an which talks about the actions of Allah, indicates the His Qayoomiyah.
