The Importance of Studying Allah’s Names and Attributes- 11th October 2015

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (RadhiAllahu ‘anhu) that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“… No people gather together in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, except tranquility descends upon them, mercy envelopes them, the angels surround them, and Allah makes mention of them amongst those who are with Him. Whosoever is slowed down by his actions will not be hastened forward by his lineage.”  [Muslim]

It is out of Allah’s generosity and kindness that He mentions our names to those closest to Him. When Allah mentions your name it means He is praising you, and if He praises you it will have an effect on your life and heart.

Some of the other virtues of seeking knowledge are:

  • It is a means of forgiveness of sins

“No people sit together to remember Allah and then they disperse except that it is said to them, “Disperse (or get up) for you have been forgiven” {Reported in Ahmad}

This is one of the greatest goals we want to attain, to meet Allah having no sins.

  • Knowledge is a means of increasing one’s faith.

In Surah  Al-A’raf  Verse 179

And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.

Allah described people who are far away from knowledge as having hearts,  but instead of using it to comprehend the religion, they use it to busy themselves with the worldly life. They have eyes but they don’t see the impact of Allah’s actions in this world. They don’t see the nurturing and teaching of Allah behind every affliction that befalls them. They have ears but they listen to everything other than the truth.

Allah describes them as cattle, or even worse because animals know their Lord and glorify Him.

From the blessings of the gatherings of knowledge is that when the heedless hear about the Hereafter, or the Qur’an, it will have an effect on their hearts if they are truthful. They will feel tranquil and relief from all their distresses, although the problems may still exist. This is because mercy descends upon these gatherings.

Knowledge about Allah is of great importance. Weak belief in Allah’s Names and Attributes affects our Worship.

We are in dire need of knowing Allah:-

1)As we are in an abode of trial.

We are tested in our:

a) pleasure with Allah’s decree

b) magnification of Allah

c) heart’s attachment to Allah.

Many times we say we are pleased with Allah, while having discontentment in our heart due to certain situations we go through. We are saying what is contradictory to what’s in our heart, and this is the state of the hypocrites.

Knowing Allah will strengthen your pleasure and contentment in Allah.

Whoever knows Allah is Al-Hakeem (The All Wise) wouldn’t measure the wisdom of Allah according to his whims; When something he likes happens he says Allah is wise, and when something contrary to what he likes happens, he is displeased and questions the wisdom behind it. Your belief in Allah’s wisdom should make you accept everything Allah has decreed for you.

2) Such that we can establish Tawheed

Tawheed is derived from Wahid and Ahad, names of Allah.

In order to establish the oneness of Allah, and servitude to Him, and taste the delight of faith in our hearts, we have to know who Allah is. Tawheed is the purpose behind our entire creation.

One of the greatest Surahs in the Qur’an is Surat Al-Ikhlaas.

In this Surah, Allah commands us to say that Allah is One. He is One in His being. He has no partner, no son, no wife, etc. There is nothing before Him, and nothing after Him. He is unique in His attributes. There is no one comparable to Him.

The Arabs called the person whom they ran to in times of difficulty, As-Samad. Allah is telling us that He is the only Samad. It also means the One who is perfect in His attributes.  Allah will make you go through situations in order to reinforce this meaning in you.

Tell yourself that there is no one who is Most-Powerful and All-Strong except Allah. Throughout your life you need to repeat these meanings to yourself. When you believe in this way, your (Laa Ilaaha illa Allah) will be affected.

The ‘Laa’ in ‘Laa Ilaaha illa Allah’ plays two roles in your life:

  1.  There is no one your heart should love or be more attached to other than Allah. This ‘Laa’ will get rid of anything else that wants to occupy your heart.
  2.  It will get rid of any fear or magnification of anyone other than Allah.

You will not love or magnify anyone more than Allah. If you live according to this in your life, then you will die according to this word.

“Whoever breathes his last with the words: La ilaha illallah, enters Paradise.”
Narrated from Mu`adh by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and Al-Hakim.

Everyone wants to say the Shahaada at the time of death, but only those who struggled to live by it will be able to.

The more you know more about Allah, the more your Tawheed will be strong and correct.

In the Qur’an there are many verses where names of Allah are mentioned after He says ‘Laa Ilaaha illa Allah’. We are required to study these names, Allah mentioned them for a reason.

In Surah Al-Hujurat Verse 18:

ان الله يعلم غيب السماوات والارض والله بصير بما تعملون

Indeed, Allah knows the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.

The person who knows Allah is always at peace. He knows that Allah is near Him, responds, etc. He never feels lonely or depressed. Allah is sufficient for him.

Whenever he consults Allah, Allah guides him whenever he seeks the help of Allah, Allah helps him. He thinks and expects good from Allah. If he doesn’t know how to express his feelings by words, he knows that Allah knows what he wants to say, and is able to give him what he wants even if he doesn’t utter it.

Reaching this level of  tranquility should be our aim.

Allah created us in order to know Him, and if we know Him we will accordingly worship Him.

In Surah At-Talaq Verse 12:

الله الذي خلق سبع سماوات ومن الارض مثلهن يتنزل الامر بينهن لتعلموا ان الله على كل شيء قدير وان الله قد احاط بكل شيء علما

It is Allah who has created seven heavens and of the earth, the like of them. [His] command descends among them so you may know that Allah is over all things competent and that Allah has encompassed all things in knowledge.

Everything that happens in the Universe is a type of command of Allah.

Allah did all of this in order for us to know that He is able to do everything, and that His knowledge encompasses everything.

3) We need to know about Allah’s names because there is a strong relationship between them and the acts of worship.

Acts of Worship of the Heart

Allah commanded us to trust and rely on Him before taking any action.

Surah Ibrahim Verse 12:

And why should we not rely upon Allah while He has guided us to our [good] ways. And we will surely be patient against whatever harm you should cause us. And upon Allah let those who would rely [indeed] rely.”

You won’t be able to put your trust in Allah unless you know Him. Whenever you don’t put your trust in Allah it means you don’t know Him.

If you say حسبي الله و نعم الوكيل – “Allah is sufficient for us and He is our Guardian” and you are still worried, then it means you don’t trust Allah. You are just saying it with a tongue, devoid of a heart.

It is narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Verily, Allah the Exalted is Modest and Concealing (Sittīr); and He loves modesty and concealment. So, when any of you bathe, let him conceal himself.”

Reported by Abu Dawud, An-Nasa’i, al-Baihaqi, and Ahmed.

Modesty isn’t just limited to appearance. It includes showing shyness to Allah. You preserve your heart, tongue, limbs from committing sins, because you are shy that Allah is watching you, all aware of what you are saying and doing.

You will be careful of committing a sin even if you are alone, because you know Allah sees you.

Acts of Worship of the Limbs

Many people complain that their prayer lacks submissiveness.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that he heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say, “Allah said: I have divided prayer between Myself and My slave into two halves, and My slave shall have what he has asked for. When the slave says: الحمد لله رب العالمين  Allah says “My slave has praised me”

And when he says:الرحمن الرحيم Allah says: My slave has extolled Me.

and when he says: مالك يوم الدين Allah says: My slave has glorified Me.

And when he says: إياك نعبد و إياك نستعين He says: This is between Me and My slave, and My slave shall have what he is asking for.

                                                                                                                                                     (Narrated by Muslim)

If you say  Guide us to the straight path -” [Surah Al-Fatihah Verse 1]  with a heart full of belief, won’t Allah guide you and help you? But we pray without belief that Allah will respond to us, that is why there is no effect of it in our hearts. We go through our prayer quickly. Say it while you believe that Allah responds to you.

When you stand up from Rukoo’ you say: سمع الله لمن حمده

Allah hears and responds to the one who praises him. This is why we say ربنا و لك الحمد , hoping for the reward from Allah.

Subhan Allah, Allahu Akbar, Alhamdulillah, Laa Ilaaha illa Allah are the most beloved words to Allah.

Only the person who says these words while understanding their meanings will get the reward.

Subhan Allah = freeing Allah from all imperfections. Allah is perfect in all His legislations and decrees. He is free of sleep, fatigue and hunger touching Him.

If you say Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah) and in your heart you feel that Allah has been unjust to you by decreeing a certain situation, then what you are saying is against you and not for you. People say Alhamdulillah (All Praise is due to Allah) and are not happy. They say Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) and in their hearts they feel that their problem has no solution, their sickness has no cure, etc.

Allah is greater than your problem and sickness.

There is also a strong relation between the names of Allah and laws.

Everything that Allah has ordained laws based on justice, wisdom, knowledge, grace, mercy, kindness, etc.

Surah An-Nisa Verse 11:

Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females. But if there are [only] daughters, two or more, for them is two thirds of one’s estate. And if there is only one, for her is half. And for one’s parents, to each one of them is a sixth of his estate if he left children. But if he had no children and the parents [alone] inherit from him, then for his mother is one third. And if he had brothers [or sisters], for his mother is a sixth, after any bequest he [may have] made or debt. Your parents or your children – you know not which of them are nearest to you in benefit. [These shares are] an obligation [imposed] by Allah . Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.

This verse is about inheritance; Allah ended the verse with “Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.”

This means that this law which Allah ordained is based on His knowledge and wisdom. Allah knows what every member of the family needs, and what suits him. He gives the exact measure needed by everyone, not more or less.

Some people disregard the laws and do it their own way. But we are deficient in our knowledge and wisdom. Many problems arise when people distribute it among themselves without referring to the Shari’ah

The more you know about Allah, the more you will accept and submit yourself to His commands. Allah is more merciful to us than we are to ourselves.

The more we learn about Allah, the more we go through situations which teach us the impacts of His names and attributes and apply what we’ve learnt.
