The Relation between UnBeneficial Knowledge, An Unfearful Heart, An Unsatisfied Soul and A Supplication that is not Answered- 8th November 2015

Zaid bin Alqam (Radi Allahu ‘anhu) narrated that the Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used to supplicate:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لَا يَخْشَعُ وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لَا تَشْبَعُ وَمِنْ دَعْوَةٍ لَا يُسْتَجَابُ لَهَا
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge which does not benefit, from a heart that does not entertain the fear (of Allah), from a soul that is not satisfied and the supplication that is not answered.”
The relation between them:
The beneficial knowledge first affects the heart, making it humble, soft and submissive to Allah. However, there are people whose hearts remain hard, the truth doesn’t reach their heart. This is because the knowledge they are learning is not beneficial.
The person with a submissive heart has an attentive heart. He may not necessarily be performing an abundantamount of good deeds, but whatever deed he does, he does it with sincerity, hoping the reward from Allah.
Knowledge also has an impact on the contentment of a person. The more he learns about Allah and the Day of Judgment, the more this world loses value in his heart. He is satisfied with whatever Allah gives him unlike the person whose knowledge is void of benefit. His heart distracted by this world. Therefore, whenever he makes du’aa’ it will be with a heedless, diverted heart.
The Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “Call upon Allaah when you are certain of a response, and remember that Allaah will not answer a du’aa’ that comes from a negligent and heedless heart.” [Al-Tirmidhi]
These are all measurements for the benefit of the knowledge we acquire.
The most important knowledge one should learn is the knowledge about Allah. This is our purpose in this world. Allah created us to know, worship Him and love Him. He didn’t create us to play and waste our life in this world.
“… And, no doubt it has been revealed to me that you (people) will be put in trial in your graves like or nearly like the trial of Masih Ad-Dajjal. (The angels) will come to everyone of you and ask him, ‘What do you know about this man (Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)) ?” The faithful believer or firm believer (Hisham was in doubt which word the Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used), will say, ‘He is Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and he is Muhammad (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) who came to us with clear evidences and guidance. So we believed him, accepted his teachings and followed and trusted his teaching.’ Then the angels will tell him to sleep (in peace) as they have come to know that he was a believer….” [Bukhari]
The Prophet(Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) came with the Qur’an and Sunnah, which contain all the articles of faith. The believer believed in them with certainty during his lifetime in the Dunya. He had علم اليقين، then عين اليقين, until he reached حق اليقين.
This person received the knowledge about Allah with belief and lived in accordance to it throughout his life.
We all recite Surat Al-Ikhlas daily, but most of the people may not know the meaning of Allah’s name As-Samad and its impact in our life.
The one who believes with certainty, knows Allah’s names, their meanings and impacts, and worships Allah according to it.
We want our state to be like that of the person mentioned above, yet when go through situations daily where Allah tests our belief in Him, we act as if we have no knowledge about Allah.
You need to explain every situation you go through according to Allah’s names and attributes.
We bring up our children in a way that their hearts are attached to everything except Allah. If your child isafraid, tell him Allah will protect him, He is the Protector. Don’t tell your child that you are by his side therefore everything will be alright.
Allah makes us go through situations because He wants us to think of Him, act upon His names and attributes. He doesn’t want us to fall into grief and sorrow. If you are not guided to worship Allah in that situation, them implore Allah to guide you. Use the names of Allah in your supplications.
