The Name of Allaah: Al-‘Azeez (PART II) – 8th November 2015
Learning the name of Allah, Al-‘Azeez, corrects our Tawheed. This name is mentioned three times in Surat Al-Imran along with Laa ‘Ilaaha illa Allah. Allah emphasizes that no one deserves our hearts’ attachment except Him, Al-‘Azeez. When we know this name, our hearts will not be distracted by or attached to the people.
Allah mentioned this name 92 times in the Qur’an, and when Allah mentions a name frequently, it means we are in dire need of it. We live our lives under the shade of this name of Allah, Al-‘Azeez.
The name Al-‘Azeez has four meanings with regards to Allah:
1) القوي – The Strong
The Most Dominant
The Invincible. It is impossible to overcome or defeat Allah. His supremacy is immune, no one can touch it with harm.
4) Unique in His attributes.
The attribute that this name implies is عزة (‘Iza).
Surat Yunus Verse 65
And let not their speech grieve you. Indeed, honor [due to power] belongs to Allah entirely. He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Shaykh AbdulRazzaq Al Badr said, “All types of عزة belong to Allah.”
There are three types of عزه( ‘Iza), according to Shaykh As-Sa’dee.
◉Evidences for عزة القوة (‘Iza of Strength)
Every verse that talks about the strength of Allah as an evidence for عزة القوة (‘Iza of Strength).
Surat Adh-Dhariyat Verse 58:
Indeed, it is Allah who is the [continual] Provider, the firm possessor of strength.
Allah sustains and provides for all the creation in the heavens and the earth by His might and strength, no one can prevent the sustenance of Allah.
Surat Fussilat Verse 15
As for ‘Aad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, “Who is greater than us in strength?” Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.
Surat Al-Baqarah 165
And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah . But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah . And if only they who have wronged would consider [that] when they see the punishment, [they will be certain] that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is severe in punishment.
Surat Al-Anfal Verse 52
[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and of those before them. They disbelieved in the signs of Allah , so Allah seized them for their sins. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and severe in penalty.
Surat Al-Haj Verse 74
They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.
◉The Impact of عزة القوة (‘Iza of Strength):
▸By Allah’s strength and power, He created the heavens and earth and brought everything into existence.
Surat Az-Zukhruf Verse 9
And if you should ask them, “Who has created the heavens and the earth?” they would surely say, “They were created by the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.”
▸By His might and power, He destroyed the disbelievers and rescued the believers.
Surat Ash-Shu’ara Verses 65-68
And We saved Moses and those with him, all together.
Then We drowned the others.
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
And indeed, your Lord – He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
▸By His might and power, He grasps the heavens and earth lest they move from their places.
▸By His power and might, He will resurrect all creation for judgement regardless if they are burnt, cut into pieces, etc.
There is no power and might in the upper and lower world except from Allah. We have no strength unless Allah gives us the strength.
◉Evidence for عزة القهر و الغلبة (‘Iza of Dominance):
Verses that talk about the Will of Allah come under this type of ‘Iza as well.
Surat Aali ‘Imran Verses 26-27
Say, “O Allah , Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.
You cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night; and You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give provision to whom You will without account.”
◉The Impact of this type of ‘Iza:
▸Allah subdued us with sleep. We may want to do something but we get overpowered through sleep. We lose our strength, our power, we can’t even think sometimes.
▸Sometimes we may intend to take an action and then we lose our resolve to carry it out. Because whatever Allah wills, happens; whatever Allah doesn’t will, will not happen.
▸Allah overpowers us with sickness.
▸Allah overpowers us with death. When the time of death arrives, no one can avert it, even for a second.
Surah Yunus Verse 49
Say, “I possess not for myself any harm or benefit except what Allah should will. For every nation is a [specified] term. When their time has come, then they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it].”
▸The transferral of kingship will not happen except with Allah’s عزة. If you ask a king to give up his throne, he wouldn’t. But Allah can remove him from that position by His ‘Iza. Allah honours whomever He wills and disgraces whomever He wills.
▸Allah subjugated the sun, moon etc. by His عزة for our service. They are all under Allah’s subdual and control.
Surat Al-An’am Verse 96
[He is] the cleaver of daybreak and has made the night for rest and the sun and moon for calculation. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
The sun never refuses to rise, it is subjugated
▸The subjugation of the Jinn and the Devils for Sulayman (‘Alaihissalam):
Surat Saba Verses 12-13
And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind – its morning [journey was that of] a month – and its afternoon [journey was that of] a month, and We made flow for him a spring of [liquid] copper. And among the jinn were those who worked for him by the permission of his Lord. And whoever deviated among them from Our command – We will make him taste of the punishment of the Blaze.
They made for him what he willed of elevated chambers, statues, bowls like reservoirs, and stationary kettles. [We said], “Work, O family of David, in gratitude.” And few of My servants are grateful.
Surat Al-Anbiya Verse 82
And of the devils were those who dived for him and did work other than that. And We were of them a guardian.
Allah didn’t give the kingdom that he gave to Sulayman (‘Alaihissalam) to anyone else after him, due to his invocation. Anyone who claims that the Jinn is serving him now then he is a liar.
(If the Shayateen serve a person, it’s due to a reason, They just don’t serve a person for nothing in return.
A man had a Jinn serving him to find lost items in his village. He would tell the people of the village where to find their lost belongings until he became famous, honoured and was known in other villages. The Jinn then came to him and said, “We won’t help you anymore until you worship us.”)
Allah tells us in Surat Saba Verse 14 how Sulayman (‘Alaihissalam) died and how Allah concealed his death from the Jinn who were subjugated to him to do hard labor. He remained leaning on his stick, which was his staff, as Ibn `Abbas may Allah be pleased with him, Mujahid, Al-Hasan, Qatadah and others said. He stayed like that for a long time, nearly a year. When a creature of the earth, which was a kind of worm, ate through the stick, it became weak and fell to the ground. Then it became apparent that he had died a long time before. It also became clear to Jinn and men alike that the Jinn do not know the Unseen as they (the Jinn) used to imagine and tried to deceive people. [Tafsir Ibn Kathir]
And when We decreed for Solomon death, nothing indicated to the jinn his death except a creature of the earth eating his staff. But when he fell, it became clear to the jinn that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating punishment.
