The Name of Allah: Al-‘Azeez (PART IV) – 22nd November 2015

Surah Al-‘Araf  Verse 180

And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.

After learning Allah’s names and attributes we need to call Him by them.

We have three types of دعاء:

1) دعاء المسألة – You ask Allah by His name

You have to praise Allah by it

You have to worship Allah by it

When you know that Allah is the All Seer and the All-Hearer, you will not sin even in seclusion as you are aware that He sees and hears you.

The different types of عزة mentioned in the Qur’an:

1) Surat An-Nisa Verse 56

Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses – We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.

Allah tells us about the punishment of the disbelievers. Allah will exchange their dead skin cells with new ones so they can taste the pain repeatedly.

The عزة implied in this verse is عزة القوى ‘Iza of strength.

2) Surat Luqman Verses 8-9

Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds – for them are the Gardens of Pleasure.

Wherein they abide eternally; [it is] the promise of Allah [which is] truth. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

The عزة implied in this verse is   عزة الإمتناع/ عزة القهر – ‘Iza of dominance or prevention.

3) Surat Luqman Verse 27

And if whatever trees upon the earth were pens and the sea [was ink], replenished thereafter by seven [more] seas, the words of Allah would not be exhausted. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Allah speaks and ordains whatever He wills.

The عزة implied in this verse is عزة القهر و الغلبة – ‘Iza of  Dominance and Overpowering.

4)Surat Al-Hashr Verse 1

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allah , and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Everything in the heavens and earth glorifies Allah, submits to Allah, worships Him, subdues to Him.

The عزة implied in this verse is عزة القهر – ‘Iza of Dominance.

5)Surat Al-Hashr Verse 24

He is Allah , the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

The عزة implied in this verse is عزة القهر – ‘Iza of Dominance.

6)Surat Al-Qamr Verse 42

They denied Our signs, all of them, so We seized them with a seizure of one Exalted in Might and Perfect in Ability.

The عزة implied in this verse is عزة القوى / عزة القهر – ‘Iza of Dominance / ‘Iza of Strength

7)Surat Al-Fath Verse 7

And to Allah belong the soldiers of the heavens and the earth. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.

The soldiers of Allah are the Angels, the wind, the sea, etc. which are all subdued to him. They cannot be a mercy or a punishment without the command of Allah.

The عزة implied in this verse is عزة القوى / عزة القهر – ‘Iza of Dominance / ‘Iza of Strength

Continuation: Q. If Allah overpowers us and everything He wills happens, and everything He does not will does not happen, then what’s the point in doing good deeds?

Allah mentioned in the Qur’an that when He created us, He showed us the way to Paradise and the way to Hell. He showed us what is good for us and what is bad for us.

Allah created you, gave you a mind, heart, senses, sound disposition, and didn’t give that all to you in vain. He gave it so that you would think, decide and take actions.

It’s up to you to choose between the way to Paradise and the way to Hell.

Knowledge-

Allah knows in advance what is going to happen until the establishment of the Day of Judgement. He knows who will be in Hell and who will be in Paradise and He knew it even before the creation of the heavens and earth, because His Knowledge is perfect.

Writing-

Allah knew and wrote everything that was going to occur in The Preserved Tablet. This writing is based on His Knowledge.

Will-

What happens now of decrees is by Allah’s Will, and this is considered ‘Iza of Dominance. Nothing can stop or repel what Allah has willed. By His Dominance, He allows these decrees to befall us, whether they are good or not. We have no choice over it.

The decrees are considered tests for us.

Allah created in us the ability and strength to take an action. We are responsible for our response to the test; Depending on whether you react correctly (you take an action which pleases Allah) or incorrectly (you take an action that displeases Allah), you will either pass or fail the test.

The matter doesn’t end here. The Qadr that comes next will be based on your response to the previous.

Let’s say you passed the test; Allah will put contentment in your heart and you become pleased with Allah, even if you still have problems.

But the person who failed will feel more constriction, less hope, get angrier, and more unhappy. As long as she doesn’t understand the Qadr, this will continue with her.

Surat Ibrahim Verse 7

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.’ “

If your response to Allah’s blessings is gratitude and you use it in obedience to Allah, the next Qadr will be that Allah will give you more of His blessings.

If you are ungrateful, the next Qadr will be punishment. This punishment is because of YOUR response to the test.  Allah is fair with us.

Whenever anything befalls you, sit down, check and analyze the situation. YOU did something, and because of that you are suffering.

Surat Al-Hadid Verse 22

No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being – indeed that, for Allah , is easy –

Surat At-Taghabun Verse 11

No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah . And whoever believes in Allah – He will guide his heart. And Allah is Knowing of all things.

This person believes that the calamity is from Allah and that His faith is being tested to prove whether or not he really believes in Allah’s Wisdom, Mercy, etc. He knows that Allah isn’t testing him or putting him through trials to torture him. Even if he can’t see the wisdom behind the situation at that moment, he knows that Allah is All-wise. He shows patience hoping that Allah rewards him and makes his scale heavy on the Day of Judgement.

The result of this belief is that Allah will make this person feel at rest and be content with Allah.

Allah knew beforehand what you will choose, what will happen and had been written it in the preserved tablet.

The Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “No slave of Allah will truly believe until he believes in al-Qadr its good and evil, and until he realizes that what has befallen him was not going to miss him and that which missed him was not going to befall him.”

[Sahih at-Tirmidhi, Authenticated by Shaykh al-Albani]

Allah makes us go through the same tests repeatedly until we succeed.

In conclusion,

We are not compelled. Allah perfected our creation, gave us natural disposition and  senses to differentiate right from wrong, to think, judge and analyse.

Allah showed us right from wrong. He showed us what is good and bad for us. Allah granted the people of Saba many blessings.  He gave them two gardens which brought forth different kinds of fruits, vegetables, big reservoirs of water to water these gardens and made it easy for them to travel.

He granted them these blessings as a test. They showed ingratitude. They didn’t thank Allah, and they felt bored with these blessings. They failed with Allah and because of this the following Qadar that Allah decreed for them were: the dam being destroyed, the two gardens being spoilt and becoming gardens of thorny trees, and Allah scattering them all over the Arabian peninsula.

Allah removed their blessings as a result of their failure with Him.

Does crying negate pleasure and contentment with Allah’s decree?

When the Prophet’s (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) son, Ibrahim, passed away, he (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) shed tears.
Anas bin Malik (Radiy Allahu ‘anhu) narrated, “We went with Allah’s Messenger (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to the blacksmith Abu Saif, and he was the husband of the wet-nurse of Ibrahim (the son of the Prophet(Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)). Allah’s Messenger (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) took Ibrahim and kissed him and smelled him and later we entered Abu Saif’s house and at that time Ibrahim was in his last breaths, and the eyes of Allah’s Messenger (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) started shedding tears. `Abdur Rahman bin `Auf said, “O Allah’s Apostle, even you are weeping!” He said, “O Ibn `Auf, this is mercy.” Then he wept more and said, “The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibrahim ! Indeed we are grieved by your separation.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

You aren’t blamed for missing whoever you are separated from, or from feeling sad and weeping. This is natural grief. However, be content and know that there is good in what Allah has decreed for you.
