The Name of Allah: Al-‘Azeez (PART VII) – 13th December 2015
The name of Allah, Al-‘Azeez is a great part of our daily lives but we don’t realize it. To us the meaning of Al-‘Azeez is limited to ‘might’.
The meaning of عزيز، عزة and its derivations in the Qur’an:
1) Surat Al-Munafiqun Verse 8:
They say, “If we return to al-Madinah, the more honoured [for power] will surely expel therefrom the more humble.” And to Allah belongs [all] honor, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know.
The hypocrites said that if they go to Madinah, Abdullah Ibn Ubayy would expel the Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and his companions. In this verse, Allah replies to them.
العزة – strength, power, triumph, support, victory, etc.
2) Surat Al-Ma’idah Verse 54:
O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion – Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people He will love and who will love Him [who are] humble toward the believers, powerful against the disbelievers; they strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of a critic. That is the favour of Allah ; He bestows it upon whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
أعزة – stern
3) Surat Ya-sin Verse 14:
When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened them with a third, and they said, “Indeed, we are messengers to you.”
Allah sent two Prophets to call the people of the village to worship Him. Then, He strengthened them with a third.
Strengthened
4) Surat Sad Verse 23:
Indeed this, my brother, has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe; so he said, ‘Entrust her to me,’ and he overpowered me in speech.”
Overpowered me
5) Surat Maryam Verse 81:
And they have taken besides Allah [false] deities that they would be for them [a source of] honour.
The disbelievers take other than Allah as deities to be a source of support and intercession for them, to protect them from the punishment of Allah.
عزَّا – help, support
6) Surat Al-Baqarah Verse 206:
And when it is said to him, “Fear Allah ,” pride in the sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place.
Allah is referring to the hypocrites. Whenever they do wrong and someone advises them, their pride and arrogance makes them reject the truth.
Arrogance
7) Surat An-Nisa Verse 139:
Those who take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do they seek with them honour [through power]? But indeed, honour belongs to Allah entirely.
Allah is referring to the hypocrites here as well.
العزة – protection, support
8) Surat Hud Verses 92-93:
He said, “O my people, is my family more respected for power by you than Allah ? But you put Him behind your backs [in neglect]. Indeed, my Lord is encompassing of what you do.
And ‘O my people, work according to your position; indeed, I am working. You are going to know to whom will come a punishment that will disgrace him and who is a liar. So watch; indeed, I am with you a watcher, [awaiting the outcome].”
Value, Esteem
9) Surat Fath Verse 3:
And [that] Allah may aid you with a mighty victory.
Strong
10)Surat Al-Kahf Verse 34:
And he had fruit, so he said to his companion while he was conversing with him, “I am greater than you in wealth and mightier in [numbers of] men.”
More
11) Surat Fatir Verse 17:
And that is for Allah not difficult.
Difficult
There is nothing that’s difficult or impossible for Allah.
12) Surat Fussilat Verses 41-42:
Indeed, those who disbelieve in the message after it has come to them… And indeed, it is a mighty Book.
Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy.
Allah is describing the Qur’an as عزيز.
The Qur’an is protected and resistant to any attack. Anyone who wants to find faults in the Qur’an will fail. It is rare, there is no book like it.
The Meanings: Strength, Stern/Harsh, Overpowering, Support, Arrogance, Honour, More in number, Difficult/Impossible, One of a kind.
Continuation: How can I worship Allah by His name العزيز? / What are the impacts of believing in the name of Allah العزيز?
1) Having إيمان in this name will give you courage and confidence
2) Know that Allah’s عزة is connected to His حكمة
3) Know that guidance is connected to the عزة of Allah
4) Knowing Allah’s name العزيز will grant you peace and tranquility
5) Believing in the name of Allah العزيز will make you feel at rest towards your provision
Whatever Allah has written for you of provision is according to His Will, Knowledge, Kindness,Strength, Power.
There are people who work day and night to increase their income, they will not get more than what Allah has written for them.
You may ask, “Why does Allah give others and withhold from me?” Allah answers you in Surat Ash-Shuraa Verse 27:
ولو بسط الله الرزق لعباده لبغوا في الارض ولكن ينزل بقدر ما يشاء انه بعباده خبير بصير
And if Allah had extended [excessively] provision for His servants, they would have committed tyranny throughout the earth. But He sends [it] down in an amount which He wills. Indeed He is, of His servants, Acquainted and Seeing.
If Allah enlarged your provision, you would have rebelled and transgressed on earth and gone far away from the right path.
Allah knows us better than we know our own selves. He will not give you more than what is good for you, nor less. He’ll give you the perfect amount. Provision isn’t limited to money. It could be knowledge, provision, success, etc.
In Surat Fatir Verse 2:
ما يفتح الله للناس من رحمة فلا ممسك لها وما يمسك فلا مرسل له من بعده وهو العزيز الحكيم
Whatever Allah grants to people of mercy – none can withhold it; and whatever He withholds – none can release it thereafter. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Mercy is indefinite. It includes the attainment of every good and the repelling of every evil or harm. Even being protected from harm is out of the mercy of Allah on us.
The imagery of this verse is as if there are treasures of mercy which no one opens and closes except Allah.
If He opens the gate of mercy for His slave, out of His ‘Iza, no one can stop or repel it. Similarly If He closes the gate of mercy out of His ‘Iza , no one attain it.
This verse could be referring to the Prophet (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). The Quraish tried to extinguish Islam, to persecute the Muslims, but all their efforts went in vain.
It could be rain. No one can command the sky to rain whenever or wherever they want. If Allah withholds the rain, no one can cause it to fall down. Sometimes we see black clouds and not a drop of rain falls. This is Allah showing us His عزة.
It could be guidance, success, health, etc. It could be anything.
It’s important to note that mercy isn’t limited to giving and opening. Sometimes Allah withholding a provision from us is a mercy.
For example, the teacher asks a question. Allah may provide some students with the answer while withholding it from others, out of His Mercy. It may be that if He enables them to answer, they will feel proud.
Allah will not give the people according to their desire. We go through many decrees which we hate, not realizing the situation we hate and are crying over is a gate of goodness for us. Out of Allah’s kindness with His servants, He will give you the best, even though you may hate it. We don’t understand because we don’t know Allah by His nameالعزيز
6) Know that there is a connection between At-Tawakkul (Reliance) and the name of Allah
In Surat Ash-Shu’ara Verse 217, Allah commands the Prophet (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and His followers to rely on العزيز، الرحيم.
And rely upon the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,
“The greatest aid for the slave, whenever he undertakes any mission, is to rely on Allah” – Shaykh As-Sa’di
Rely on Allah by invoking Him, seeking His help and asking Him to grant you the strength to accomplish your duties.
Reliance is an action of the heart. It is relying on Allah in attaining good and averting a harm or evil.
No one can enable you to do good or prevent an evil except Allah, Al-‘Azeez. He will give you the strength, guidance, and support and no one else. So seek it from Him.
Many people take all the means for guidance or healing, and they fail, because they rely on the means and not Allah.
If all the people gathered to help you, they would never be able to. So don’t think of anyone, just think of Allah. He will help and support you by His ‘Iza.
Surat Al-Anfal Verse 49:
[Remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease said, “Their religion has deluded those [Muslims].” But whoever relies upon Allah – then indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
The Prophet ﷺ and his companions were only 313 men in comparison to the army of the Quraish, who were 1000. The hypocrites said that they were deceived with their religion. Allah answers them in this verse.
It’s not a matter of number or forces, it is a matter of how much you are seeking help from Allah,
The believer, who knows Allah العزيز, knows that power and strength is from Him. Victory is from Allah, العزيز.
This is a matter of belief.
Allah didn’t say what will happen, He just ended the verse with indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
This is from the eloquence of the Qur’an.
Know that Allah is العزيز. Sit down and enumerate the impacts of His عزة. If you put your trust in Allah, He will give you success, victory and make you superior.
Repeat what you are studying again and again and reflect over this meaning in your life. We constantly go through situations where Allah wants us to rely on Him, but we rely on ourselves.
7) The connection between العزيز and الرحيم
Allah mentioned His names العزيز الرحيم together nine times in Surat Ash-Shu’ara. Whenever Allah repeatedly mentions a name in one Surah, it means that the theme of that Surah revolves around that name.
