The Name of Allah: Al-‘Azeez (PART IX) – 17th Rabi’ al-Awwal 1437
Continuation: A person may ask, “If Allah is really العزيز, why doesn’t He support the believers and help them in overpowering the disbelievers?”
Merely looking and contemplating over the sky leads us to know who Allah is, and this is something ingrained in our Fitrah– Natural Instinct. For every action, there is a doer. Looking into the action teaches us the attributes of the doer.
When you look into the creation, you will learn about Allah. If the sky is high, then the Creator of this sky is even higher. My eyes cannot reach the end of the sky or even encompass it. If this is my state with the creation, then how about Allah, the Creator?
Every verse in the Qur’an is related to the other.
Allah is the One who created these great creations in the sky, and He is all able to resurrect the people on the Day of Judgement. He promised this day will come and He has the power to bring it.
All the witnesses and what they witnessed will be brought forth on the Day of Judgement for judgement.
The One who created these great creations in the sky, the One who is All-Wise, All-Knowledgeable, All-Merciful, All-Able, is aware of what the disbelievers did to the believers, and has set a promised day for them – The Day of Judgment, to recompense them for their actions.
This Surah is a Makki Surah. The disbelievers were persecuting the believers and torturing them with different types of torments. Allah revealed this Surah to console the hearts of the Prophet ﷺ and the believers.
Any person who embraces Islam or gives Da’wah will go through trials. Why? Because if it began with favors, everyone would do it – the truthful, the liars, the good, and the bad. Allah allows this in order to distinguish between the truthful and the liars.
Surat Al-‘Ankabut Verse 2-3:
احسب الناس ان يتركوا ان يقولوا امنا وهم لا يفتنون
Do the people think that they will be left to say, “We believe” and they will not be tried?
ولقد فتنا الذين من قبلهم فليعلمن الله الذين صدقوا وليعلمن الكاذبين
But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.
People go through tests, and the believers were thrown into a fire, but it’s temporary. It’s nothing compared to the eternal delight they will have after they die. And the fire is nothing in comparison to the fire of Hell.
Allah is الحكيم and puts everything in its right place. Do you really think that the disbelievers will be left without punishment? A day will come wherein they will be dealt fairly by Allah, and they will taste the evil of their actions.
Allah allowed what He allowed to happen to the believers to expiate their sins, elevate them in ranks and to make them reach Paradise.
A person adopted the right path after years of being astray. Soon after, he was tried repeatedly. He may have faced pressure from the people around him. Allah wants to strengthen his faith, to make him flee to Allah and make him realise that no one can help him except Allah. Allah wants him to make du’aa and ask Him. Yet there are many people who relapse after they were tested. They didn’t understand the wisdom and failed.
The trials distinguish between those who are truthful and those who are insincere.
Allah sends trials to strengthen our faith, to strengthen our supplication. If your calamity is still going on then it may mean you haven’t invoked Allah enough. Cry more to Him, beg Him, and you will be responded to.
Abdullah bin Amr narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said, “No (believing) person gets sick but (his deeds) will be recorded for him in accordance with what he used to do when he was well.” (Bukhari)
Allah is elevating this person in ranks and reward. His good deeds may not be enough to help him reach the rank Allah prepared for him in Paradise, so Allah allows this to happen. We can’t judge Allah’s actions. We may not completely understand them but we have to believe and know that He is All-able, All-wise and All-merciful.
It is impossible that the One who perfected the creation of the heavens and earth would leave the disbelievers without punishment. There is a promised and set time for them. Even if you find that they didn’t receive their punishment in this world, have no doubt that it is waiting for them in the hereafter.
Understand that this world is not the abode of recompense. Not everyone will get their rights here.
Surat Ali ‘Imran Verses 196-197:
لا يغرنك تقلب الذين كفروا في البلاد
Be not deceived by the [uninhibited] movement of the disbelievers throughout the land.
متاع قليل ثم ماواهم جهنم وبئس المهاد
[It is but] a small enjoyment; then their [final] refuge is Hell, and wretched is the resting place.
Don’t be deceived by the current state of the disbelievers. This Dunya is temporary and little. Regardless of the evil the disbelievers are doing, they will never escape Allah. Their abode will be the Hell Fire in the end.
(Surat Ibrahim Verses 42 – 52)
After Surah Ibrahim comes Surah Hijr. Allah ended the former talking about the state of the disbelievers, and began the latter talking about them as well.
When you repeat these verses to yourself you’ll find relief. This Dunya does not go on without wisdom or control. Allah knows exactly what’s happening; He’s giving the disbelievers respite and there is good in it for the believers. To Allah belongs the utmost wisdom; we can’t judge over His actions with our narrow, limited minds.
The problem is that we look at events according to our desires. We see mercy through the filter of our whims whereas for Allah, mercy is whatever is good for that particular person.
Sa’d reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “The most in their suffering among the people are the Prophets, then the best, then the (next) best. One is afflicted in accordance with his Deen. If his Deen is firm his affliction is hard, and if his Deen is weak his affliction is light. Indeed one would be so much subjected to adversity until he walks among the people without any sins.” [Tirmidhi]
The more severe a person’s trial is, the higher their rank with Allah is. As your faith increases, the severity of your trials increase. However do not let this discourage you from increasing your faith ; because through your faith, Allah will keep you firm, and help you deal with the problems. He’ll send down tranquillity in your heart. This is why we see people tranquil and calm although they may be going through severe calamities.
Surat Al-Buruj Verse 10:
ان الذين فتنوا المؤمنين والمؤمنات ثم لم يتوبوا فلهم عذاب جهنم ولهم عذاب الحريق
Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.
Allah still opens the door of repentance for the disbelievers, because He is merciful. But if they continue and do not desist, then He warns them of the burning fire.
The recompense is of the same nature as the deed. Just as they burnt the believers in this world, Allah will burn them with a fire 70 times hotter in the next.
Don’t let the Shaytan make you think evil of Allah. We feel sad when we see oppression taking place, but what’s upon us is to pray for them and to think and expect good from Allah. This is just the Dunya. It is a prison for a believer and a Jannah for the disbeliever. Our Jannah is in the hereafter. And We will be the ones laughing at them on the Day of Judgement.
The situation around the world is becoming intense by the day. Remind yourself of these verses.
In Verses 12-16, Allah tells us who He is:
ان بطش ربك لشديد
Indeed, the vengeance of your Lord is severe.
انه هو يبدئ ويعيد
Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats.
Just as He originated the creation, He is able to recreate and resurrect the disbelievers and punish them on the Day of Judgement. This should put fear in our hearts.
وهو الغفور الودود
And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate,
This should put love and hope in our hearts.
ذو العرش المجيد
Honourable Owner of the Throne,
فعال لما يريد
Effector of what He intends.
This should put magnification of Allah in our hearts and stop us from sinning or even coming close to a sin.
We have to live our lives with fear, love, hope, and magnification of Allah.
But what’s wrong with the disbelievers? Why do they continue persisting in sin?
Allah tells us in Verses 19 – 20:
بل الذين كفروا في تكذيب
But they who disbelieve are in [persistent] denial,
والله من ورائهم محيط
While Allah encompasses them from behind.
They are in denial.
Verses 21 – 22:
بل هو قران مجيد
But this is an honoured Qur’an
في لوح محفوظ
[Inscribed] in a Preserved Slate.
What is the connection between the Qur’an and their denial? If they just ponder over the Qur’an, they would cease to do what they are doing.
Whenever Allah mentions the word ‘تدبر’ in the Qur’an it’s directed to the disbelievers and the hypocrites. If they pondered over the Qur’an they would be guided. It would cure their disbelief and hypocrisy.
