The Name of Allah: Al-‘Azeez (PART XI) – 30th Rabi’ al-Awwal 1437
Everyone talks about the current situation in the Muslim world, but not everyone has the right belief regarding it.
In one of the Friday Khutbahs, the Imam of the Haram highlighted the different aspects of victory in the Qur’an. He said, in brief:
Victory takes place in many forms:-
1) Victory to the believers and defeat of the disbelievers (in terms of war).
This is is what people generally refer to when they think of victory and it is the most beloved to the hearts. But victory isn’t just limited to this.
2) Destruction of the disbelievers and rescue of the believers (which happened with the Messengers and their followers)
For example, Prophet Nuh (‘Alayhissalam) didn’t fight his people, but Allah rescued him and his followers in the Ark and drowned everyone else. This is a form of victory.
3) Revenge against the enemies after the deaths of the Prophets and the Messengers.
Prophets Yahya and Zakariya (‘Alayhumussalam) were killed by their people. After their death, Allah made their da’wah prevail and sent a king who killed all those who had killed them.
Allah never sent a Messenger whose people killed him or any of the believers, but He sent someone later on who supported their call and sought vengeance for them. They were killed, but their call prevailed.
4) Al Hujjah – Convincing Proof
Ibrahim never fought with his people, but he would always debated with them.
He said in Surah Al-An’am Verses 81-83
And how should I fear what you associate while you do not fear that you have associated with Allah that for which He has not sent down to you any authority? So which of the two parties has more right to security, if you should know?
They who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice – those will have security, and they are [rightly] guided.
And that was Our [conclusive] argument which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise by degrees whom We will. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing.
And in Surat Al-Baqarah Verse 258
Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord [merely] because Allah had given him kingship? When Abraham said, “My Lord is the one who gives life and causes death,” he said, “I give life and cause death.” Abraham said, “Indeed, Allah brings up the sun from the east, so bring it up from the west.” So the disbeliever was overwhelmed [by astonishment], and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
His people were left speechless and unable to refute him. This is a kind of victory.
5) Emigration or situations where the Muslims are killed and persecuted.
You may ask how; but this means that Islam is prevailing. It’s causing rage in the hearts of the disbelievers, and it’s this very rage which pushes them to persecute the believers.
Many Prophets were expelled from their countries and many believers were persecuted by their enemies throughout the course of history, when the truth, Islam began to spread.
In the story of the People of the Ditch, after the king shot an arrow attempting to kill the boy but missed, the Boy told him, “You will only be able to kill me if you say: In the Name of Allah, the Lord of the Boy,” and when the King did this the Boy was killed, the people believed in Allah and the truth prevailed. The disbelievers, out of rage, built a ditch full of fire to throw these believers in it.
Emigration, imprisonment, persecution and torture are all kinds of afflictions which indicate the victory of the religion.
Surat At-Tawbah Verse 40
If you do not aid the Prophet – Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, “Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.” And Allah sent down his tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah – that is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
After the emigration of the Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), Islam prevailed and spread.
Surat Al-‘Ankabut Verse 26
And Lot believed him. [Abraham] said, “Indeed, I will emigrate to [the service of] my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”
6) Staying firm on the truth
If you stay firm regardless of the intensity of the affliction, you are victorious.
Surat Muhammad Verse 7
O you who have believed, if you support Allah , He will support you and plant firmly your feet.
If you are debating with your opponent who is on the wrong path, he might be oppressing or afflicting you with harm. As long as you stay firm and patient on the right path, Allah will support you, and this is considered victory.
Your opponent harms you because he wants you to change and be like him, and forsake your religion. Don’t give him the opportunity to do so. Stay firm. Allah will give you rest in your heart and peace in your mind. This is considered victory.
7) People embracing Islam.
This is a sign that Islam is victorious.
When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest,
And you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes,
Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance.
People are trying their best to extinguish Islam, but more and more people are embracing the religion because Allah is Al-‘Azeez. He supports His religion. We are victorious, but most people don’t know.
There are Prophets who were given all these forms of victory (like Musa and Muhammad ‘Alayhumusalam) and Prophets who were given some (like Ibrahim ‘Alayhissalam).
In conclusion, in order to achieve victory and support from Allah, it’s upon us to hold fast to the Qur’an and Sunnah and establish the religion on earth. We don’t need forces and swords now. This is all that’s required from us, and Allah will make us superior over our enemies.
