The formula for attaining contentment in your life
Contentment has three conditions which have to be fulfilled:
- Contentment with Allaah as your Lord
- Contentment with Islam as your Religion
- Contentment with the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) as your Messenger
If these conditions are met, you will be of those the Prophet (ﷺ) meant with regards to the following hadeeth:
من رضي بالله ربًا وبالإسلام دينًا، وبمحمد رسولا وجبت له الجنة
“Whoever is pleased with Allaah as his Rabb, with Islam as his religion and with Muhammad (ﷺ) as (Allaah’s) Messenger, Paradise will be made obligatory for him.” [Muslim]
من قال حين يسمع المؤذن: أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، وأن محمدًا عبده ورسوله، رضيت بالله ربًا وبالإسلام دينًا، غفر له ذنبه
“He who says when hearing the Adhan:
‘Ash-hadu an la ilaaha ill Allaah Wah-dahu la sharika Lahu, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa Rasuluhu, radhitu Billaahi Rabban, wa bi Muhammadin Rasulan, wa bil Islami Dinan
[I testify that there is no true god except Allaah Alone, and He has no partner and Muhammad (ﷺ) is His slave and Messenger; I am content with Allaah as my Rabb, with Muhammad as my Messenger and with Islam as my Deen], his sins will be forgiven.” [Muslim]
من قال إذا أصبح : رضيت بالله ربا وبالإسلام دينا وبمحمد نبيا فأنا الزعيم لآخذن بيده حتى أدخله الجنة
Radeetu Billaahi Rabban wa Bil Islami Deenan Wa Bi Muhammadin Nabiya
“I am pleased with Allaah as my Rabb, with Islam as my Deen, and with Muhammad as my Prophet.”
Whomever recites that Du’aa when he enters the morning, Allaah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “I guarantee that I will definitely take him by his hand and enter him into Paradise.” [At-Tabarani]
You can attain contentment with Allah:
#1 By being pleased with Allaah as your Lord (Rabb) who has brought us into existence, provides us with sustenance and all that we need for our existence.
#2 – To be pleased with Allaah as your Lord who bestowed upon you many blessings and to use these blessings in obedience to Allaah.
#3 – To be pleased with Allaah as your Lord with regards to what He opened for you of gates of goodness and to use it to enter Paradise.
#4 – To be pleased with what Allaah has ordained upon us.
Contentment with Islam as your religion can be achieved by being pleased with Islam as your Religion:
Look into every law and legislation; check whether you are pleased with what Allaah has legislated. The believer who is pleased with Islam as his Religion, believes that these laws and legislations are ordained by the One Who is العليم الحكيم Al-‘Aleem (All-Knower), Al-Hakeem (All-Wise), Who Knows what is good for His slaves. Thus, He ordains what conforms to our nature and what will purify our souls.
Allaah did not enjoin Salaat (prayer), Sawm (fasting), Zakaat, and Hajj, except that we reform ourselves and purify our souls. There is good in every law that Allaah ordained; there is purification in it for our souls. When you put your head on the ground in Sujood (prostration), you are curing the pride you have in your heart. When you fast one month abstaining from food and drink, you are purifying your soul. Also, the human soul loves money, so when you spend in Zakaat, it purifies your soul.
Let’s take the ruling of the brother-in-law in Islam as an example:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
The brother in law is death. [Muslim]
A woman may say: “But when I got married to his brother he was just a baby and I raised him; he is like my son.” This is a law in the Religion of Islam. Are you pleased with Islam as your Religion? Do not open the gate of affliction for yourself. Say سمعنا و أطعنا (We hear and we obey).
In Surat al-Baqarah [2:282], Allaah commands us to write it down when we take a loan. A person may say: “But I trust him, I know him.” If you are pleased with Islam as your Religion, you will say سمعنا و أطعنا (we hear and we obey).
Contentment with the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) as your Messenger can be achieved by being pleased with Muhammad (ﷺ) as your Messenger.
To be pleased with Muhammad (ﷺ) as your Messenger entails reading his Sunnah (narrations) and taking him as a good example to be followed in your life. You will not be able to take him as an example unless you learn his Seerah (biography) and characteristics, read about his Sunnah, his statements and actions, his relationship with his family, with his companions, with his enemies. If you do not know him, you will not be able to follow him. You should own and read the books of Hadeeth.
After knowing the meaning of “I am pleased with Allaah as my Creator, Islam as my religion and the Prophet (ﷺ) as my Messenger رضيت بالله ربا و بالإسلام دينا و بمحمد نبيا, we should ask ourselves if we are truly pleased with Allaah as our Lord, Islam as our Religion, and Muhammad (ﷺ) as our Prophet. If you are, you will have a good life and wellbeing. Your soul will be purified and you will be content. You will have peace of mind صلاح البال. This is just one benefit of learning about Allaah.
