The Name of Allaah: Allaah (Part 1)
The noblest knowledge is the knowledge about Allaah and the greatest verse in the Qur’an is Ayat al-Kursi because it talks about Allaah. Surat al-Ikhlas is equal to one third of the Qur’an because it tells you who Allaah is. Allaah honored His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ by teaching Him about His noble self, and the Messenger ﷺ taught us.
If people are abandoning the noblest knowledge, then what are they acquiring? If they are acquiring knowledge related to the Dunya and are ignoring to learn about who Allaah is, what will their degrees or worldly knowledge benefit them on the Day of Judgment? If a person does not know who Allaah is, but is an expert in mathematics, how will he say “my Lord is Allaah” in his grave, whilst he does not know who Allaah is? The first question a person will be asked in his grave is: “Who is your Lord?” And the believer will answer: “ربي الله” (My Lord is Allaah).
We have to know Allaah by His Names, Attributes, and Actions. These are all included in the answer: ربي الله (My Lord is Allaah). This is a very concise answer, which if a person answers with, he is considered a successful person with Allaah. His grave will turn into a bed from Paradise; it will be made vast for him, and a window to Paradise will be opened for him.
What is the meaning of
لا = No
God, who deserves to be loved, magnified, and worshipped
Except Allaah
This لا [no (negation)] removes every other false deity in our hearts. There is no one we love more than Allaah; no one we magnify more than Allaah. We have to check the لا اله الا الله in our hearts. We have to check our beloved ones – do we love them like Allaah or more than Allaah? لا إله إلا الله means there is no one you love with the utmost love except Allaah.
For example, if a woman has a Christian mother and Christmas season is coming along. The mother tells her daughter she has to celebrate it. This is a test for her If she yields to her mother, it means that the love of her mother is greater than the love of Allaah in her heart. These are the tests of your beloved ones; your love is shown through different situations.
In Surat Al-Baqarah [2:165]:
“And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allaah as rivals (to Allaah). They love them as they love Allaah. But those who believe, love Allaah more (than anything else). If only those who do wrong could see, when they will see the torment, that all power belongs to Allaah and that Allaah is Severe in punishment.”
It is as if their hearts are divided in two: One part for Allaah and the other part for rivals (to Allaah). This is Shirk, especially if this love leads to humility and magnification of that person.
Our hearts should be always checked. We have to always check our hearts regarding our beloved ones. Allaah says in Surat Tawbah [9:24]:
“Say: If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your kindred, the wealth that you have gained, the commerce in which you fear a decline, and the dwellings in which you delight … are dearer to you than Allaah and His Messenger, and striving hard and fighting in His Cause, then wait until Allaah brings about His Decision (torment). And Allaah guides not the people who are Al-Fasiqun (the rebellious, disobedient to Allaah).”
Deification (التأليه) is the Right of Allaah. Allaah mentions eight matters which are beloved to the heart of the human being. If any or some or all of these are more beloved to you than Allaah, His Messenger, and Jihaad, then wait. Wait until Allaah brings His Decision – I.e. His torment.
And Allaah guides not the people who are Al-Fasiqun (the rebellious, disobedient to Allaah.”
And Allaah called them Al Fasiqeen الفاسقين. Whoever prefers these over the love of Allaah and His Messenger and Jihaad, it means that He is one of the Fasiqeen فاسقين (disobedient to Allaah). Let not the love of these matters exceed the love of Allaah in your heart.
If you say this لا la with understanding, it will take out these beloved ones from your heart. No one deserves your love and magnification except Allaah. Your mother, husband, children are your beloved, but Allaah has more Rights on you. This is a very important لا النافية (Lam of negation) which clears your heart and makes it pure for Allaah. This is the role of لاla in la ilaha illa Allaah لا اله الا الله. We have to know the meaning of the Name “الله”.
What is the secret behind the Name of Allaah “الله”?
Shaikh ‘Abdur-Razzaq al-Badr (حفظه الله) answered this in Fiqh Al-Asmaa. He said that the Name Allaah has special characteristics:
From the characteristics of this Name is that this Name is the basis for all the Names of Allaah and all the other Names are added to it.
E.g. You say Allaah Ar-Rahmaan, Allaah Al-Kareem. Allaah includes the meaning of all the Names of Allaah – it includes the meanings of the Name of Allaah Al-Kareem, Ar-Rahmaan, etc.
This means that the more you know the Names of Allaah and their meanings in detail, the more you will strengthen and complete the meaning of the Name “الله” in your heart. The less you know the Names of Allaah, the lesser the completion of the meaning of the Name “الله” is in your heart.
Therefore, the person who says: “My Lord is Allaah” ربي الله in his grave knows who Allaah الرحمن (Ar-Rahmaan), الرحيم (Ar-Raheem), الكريم (Al-Kareem), etc. is. We have to work throughout our lives learning more and more about Allaah in order to strengthen the meaning of the Name of Allaah الله in our hearts.
Shaikh ‘Abdur-Razzaq al-Badr (حفظه الله) also said:
From the characteristics of this Name is that it requires the knowledge of the meaning of all the Names.
The Names of Allaah explain and show us the Attribute of the Divinity of Allaah in detail. All the Attributes of Majesty, Glory, and Beneficence, are added to Al-Uloohiyah.
The more you learn the Names of Allaah, the more the Name “الله” will be completed. It is easy to utter this Name, but it is difficult to complete its meaning because it requires you to know the rest of the Names of Allaah, their meanings, and their impacts in detail. You need to learn about Allaah and see the impacts of those Names in your life.
E.g. Learning about Allaah Al-Aziz and see the impact of His عزة (Might) in your life.
As the days pass, you will increase in knowledge about Allaah, and you increase in certainty, until your lifespan comes to an end and you know who Allaah, your Lord is.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“A man from my nation will be called before all of creation on the Day of Resurrection, and ninety-nine scrolls will be spread out for him, each one extending as far as the eye can see. Then Allaah will say: ‘Do you deny anything of this?’ He will say: ‘No, O Lord.’ He will say: ‘Have My recording scribes been unfair to you?’ Then He will say: ‘Apart from that, do you have any good deeds?’ The man will be terrified and will say: ‘No.’ (Allaah) will say: ‘Indeed, you have good deeds with Us, and you will not be treated unjustly this Day.’ Then a card will be brought out on which is written Ash-hadu an la ilaaha illaAllaah wa anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasooluhu (I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger). He will say: ‘O Lord, what is this card compared with these scrolls?’ He will say: ‘You will not be treated unjustly.’ Then the scrolls will be placed in one side of the Balance (scales) and the card in the other. The scrolls will go up (i.e. be light) and the card will go down (i.e. will weigh heavily).” [Ibn Maajah]
We are thus required to learn the Names of Allaah in detail, their meanings, their related attributes, the impacts of their attributes, and how to live in accordance with that Name. Everything around us tells us who Allaah is. Allaah endears Himself to us through His favor and blessings, although He is in no need of us. Allaah is showing the impacts of His Attributes, of His Mercy and Greatness, and still some people do not see. Allaah shows us His Management and Disposal of Affairs. He shows us His Protection, He shows us His Might, yet we live our lives heedlessly – eating, sleeping, and going to work.
From its special characteristics is that you do not drop the Alif and Lam from it when it is preceded by ياء النداء (The Ya ياء of Calling)
All the Names of Allaah start with Al ال. If you add ya “يا” to it, you omit the Al ال. Instead of Ar-Raheem الرحيم you will say Ya Raheem يا رحيم. However, when you add Ya يا to الله, you do not cancel the Al ال. This is the only Name where if you add Yal Munadi يا المنادي, you do not omit the ال.
Another characteristic of this Name is that it is used in most of the remembrances of Allaah.
Another characteristic of this Name is that it is the Name which is mentioned most in the Qur’an. It is mentioned over two thousand two hundred times in the Qur’an, which does not occur with any other Name, and Allaah has opened thirty three Surahs with it.
And he (Shaikh ‘Abdur-Razzaq al-Badr (حفظه الله)) mentioned that Ibn Al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said regarding the spiritual characteristic of this Name:
This Name is not mentioned about something little except that it becomes many, nor at the time of fear but it will remove it; not during distress but it will relieve it, nor during grief but it will dispel it; not during tightness but it will broaden it. It is not attached to a weak person, but he will be strengthened, nor one who is humiliated, except that he will attain honor; not one who is poor, but he will be enriched, nor one who is lonely, but he will find delight; not an oppressed person, but he will be supported, nor a person touched with harm, but his harm will be removed. This is the Name by which distresses are removed, and blessings are sought, and evil is repelled, and good is attained.
