Rules regarding the Names of Allaah (Part 2)

The Prophet said:

إِنَّ لِلَّهِ تِسْعَةً وَتِسْعِينَ اسْمَا مِائَةً إِلاَّ وَاحِدًا مَنْ أَحْصَاهَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ

“Allaah has ninety-nine Names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever أحصاها will go to Paradise.” [Bukhaari]

The difference among the Scholars in enumerating the 99 Names is due to the difference of rules they follow in deducing the Names from the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

There are more than 99 Names of Allaah, but we are seeking the specific 99 which have significance. The significance is that whoever knows them, understands them, worships Allaah by them, and memorizes them, will enter Paradise.

Rule No. 4 – دلالة الاسم على الوصف (Every Name of Allaah should imply a Noble Attribute)

E.g. The Name of Allaah العليم (Al-‘Aleem) indicates the Attribute of العلم [Al-‘Ilm (Knowledge)]

E.g. The Name of Allaah الحكيم (Al-Hakeem) indicates the Attribute of الحكمة [Al-Hikmah (Wise)]

E.g. The Name of Allaah الرحمن (Ar-Rahmaan) indicates the Attribute of الرحمة [Ar-Rahmah (Merciful)]

Rule No. 5 – أن يكون الوصف دل عليه الاسم في غاية الجمال و الكمال   (The Attribute should reach the height of perfection and beauty. There cannot be a possibility of deficiency. It has to be purely perfect.)

E.g. The Attribute of Speech (صفة الكلام)

Allaah speaks whatever He wills, whenever He wills, to whomever He wills.

In general, speech could be good, and could be evil. Therefore, we cannot call Allaah “المتكلم” because this attribute can take both good and evil, and Allaah’s Speech is never evil.

E.g. The Attribute of Deception (صفة الخداع)

Allaah mentions in Surat An-Nisaa’ [4:142]:

“Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allaah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salaat (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allaah but little.”

Deception could be good and it could be evil, therefore we cannot call Allaah “خادع”

E.g. The Attribute of Plotting (صفة المكر)

In Surah ‘Aal-Imran [3:54], Allaah says:

“And they (disbelievers) plotted [to kill ‘Iesa (Jesus)], and Allaah planned too. And Allaah is the Best of the planners.”

The attribute of plotting takes both good and evil forms, therefore we cannot call Allaah “ماكر”, although He mentions that He is خير الماكرين.

E.g. The Attribute of Mocking

It implies the attribute of إستهزاء. Mocking can either be good or bad, therefore it is not one of the 99 Names of Allaah.

E.g. The Name الغفور (Al-Ghafoor) implies the Attribute of مغفرة (To forgive; i.e. overlook the mistakes of the person)

This Attribute can never be evil; it is always good. Therefore one of Allaah’s 99 Beautiful Names is الغفور (Al-Ghafoor)

These rules are applied to Adam (عليه السلام) in Surat al-Baqarah [2:30-38]:

“And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: “Verily, I am going to place (mankind) generations after generations on earth.” They said: “Will You place therein those who will make mischief therein and shed blood, – while we glorify You with praises and thanks (Exalted be You above all that they associate with You as partners) and sanctify You.” He (Allaah) said: “I know that which you do not know.”

Name of Allaah: جاعلٌ

This is a proper noun, and the Tanween indicates that. This is a restricted name of Allaah.

ربك – It is mentioned restricted to “ك” in this verse, but since it has been mentioned in unrestricted form in other verses, it is one of the 99 Names of Allaah.

Note: Actions of Allaah come in the verb form in the Qur’an.

E.g. Surat-ad-Duha:  هدى –  أغنى

There are many Actions of Allaah in the Qur’an. And Allaah’s Actions are of two kinds:

  1. a) Affirmed Actions

E.g. “أنزل من السماء”

E.g. “يضل من يشاء”

b) Negated Actions

E.g. “إن الله لا يظلم”

E.g. “لم يلد و لم يولد”

Benefits of Knowing the Actions of Allaah:

a) When you know an Action is affirmed to Allaah, you will use the verb which denotes the action when talking about Him. We should not invent words and actions from our own minds.

b) You will integrate these Actions in your supplications

E.g. اللهم اغنني

E.g. اللهم ارزقني

c) The more you know the Actions of Allaah, the more your faith in Him will increase

Actions of Allaah: قال – Qala

This implies the Attribute of Speech. Allaah Speaks with a voice which was heard by the Angels, by Adam (عليه السلام), by Iblees. There are deviated sects who deny that Allaah speaks. This verse is evidence against that.

This is mentioned twice in this verse, and ten times in these 9 verses. We have to affirm this Action to Allaah.

أعلم – A’lam

This is one of the Actions of Allaah which implies the Attribute of Knowledge. This is mentioned five times in these set of verses. Allaah Knows and He teaches.

أتجعل – Ataj’al

The Angels asked Allaah if He would put on earth those who would make mischief.

And He taught Adam all the names (of everything), then He showed them to the angels and said: “Tell Me the names of these if you are truthful.”

Actions of Allaah:

علّم – Allaah taught Adam

عرضهم – Allaah showed them to the Angels

فقال – Allaah said

They (angels) said: “Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Verily, it is You, the All-Knower, the All-Wise.”

Actions of Allaah:

علمتنا – Allaah taught the Angels

Names of Allaah:

العليم – Al-‘Aleem

الحكيم – Al-Hakeem

He said: “O Adam! Inform them of their names,” and when he (Adam) had informed them of their names, He said: “Did I not tell you that I know the Ghaib (unseen) in the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you have been concealing?”

Actions of Allaah:

قال + أقل – Qala – Aqala

This is mentioned thrice in this verse

أعلم غيب السماوات و الأرض – Allaah Knows the unseen of the heavens and earth

و أعلم

This is mentioned twice:

And (remember) when We said to the angels: “Prostrate yourselves before Adam.” And they prostrated except Iblees (Satan); he refused and was proud and was one of the disbelievers (disobedient to Allaah).

Actions of Allaah:

قلنا – Allaah said:

And We said: “O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in the Paradise and eat both of you freely with pleasure and delight of things therein from wherever you will, but come not near this tree or you both will be of the Dhalimun (wrong-doers).”

Actions of Allaah:

قلنا – Allaah said:

Then the Shaytaan (Satan) made them slip therefrom (Paradise), and got them out from that in which they were. We said: “Get you down, all, with enmity between yourselves. On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment for a time.”

Actions of Allaah:

قلنا – Allaah said:

“Then Adam received from his Lord, Words. And his Lord pardoned him (accepted his repentance). Verily, He is the One Who forgives (accepts repentance), the Most Merciful.”

Actions of Allaah:

تاب – Allaah is the One Who Guides the person to repentance and then accepts it from him. This implies the Attribute of التوبة (Repentance)

Names of Allaah:

التواب (At-Tawwab)

الرحيم (Ar-Raheem)

We said: “Get down all of you from this place (Paradise), then whenever there comes to you Guidance from Me, and whoever follows My Guidance, there shall be no fear on them, nor shall they grieve.

Actions of Allaah:

قلنا – Allaah said:

In your daily recitation, focus on the Actions of Allaah. This is how your faith will strengthen and how you will learn about Allaah.
